Now that the dust has settled, what went wrong?
>>
Nobody actually played the first game and those that did instantly went into their 47498175th replay of Fallout New Vegas after realizing how abysmally dogshit it was.

"sludge"

nothing stands out. None of the characters, designs, or anything stand out. You need something that can become iconic. The colors are also shades of brown. Horrible costumes and designs. Companions are various shades of brown.

Nothing stands out. It's just bog-standard millennial workshop shit.

wait, this came out?

>>733683636
you're right. those characters all look objectively different, but for some reason look the same.

No options for sexy outfits to customize your player character like Fallout New Vegas and even Fallout 4 did.
I wanted to role play as a seductress pickpocket, and it didn't give me the option to dress like one.

I liked it
Slop can be nice once in a while

I was just about to type I can't see it being anyone's favorite game. At least the devs had fun with it. There baseball card collecables in the game with real people on them who I'm assuming are people who worked on the game.

New Vegas was really lightning in a bottle, we don't have the technology to make something as good anymore

One faction was blatantly unfinished and left to be villains only, despite all the evidence that they were meant to be more in depth. Most of the factions in general are really shallow and kind of clash with the companions of those factions. Nothing about them inspires the kind of conversations people have about similar games because none of them are that interesting or have you make difficult decisions.

You barely get any skill points. This wouldn't matter if the skills had significant impact on the way the game plays. Instead most of the options end up feeling like traps. They also don't really offer many roleplaying options or differences in play style to make multiple playthroughs more appealing. The game ends up feeling like two different games awkwardly mashed together, a visual novel and a loot based shooter. And if you don't take speech, you're rarely going to get a satisfying result from the vn(dialogue) side of the game. A lot of the decisions they made feel like they were afraid of making the same mistakes as the first game, so they made something even worse instead.

Melee weapons are an afterthought and just fucked in general. Theres like 3 amazing melee weapons that are so good you can do great with them even if you've invested 0 points into anything melee related. The rest are borderline unusable. Most melee weapons perform worse than a gun, even if you've invested 10 points into melee and 0 into guns. God help you if you decided to try stealth melee on the hardest difficulty. Meanwhile guns offer a multitude of different play styles and theres so many of them that you're constantly finding something new to play with.

The world building in general is just kind of lame. You'll see factions having a presence in places where it feels like they shouldn't and people being absent or not doing things where it feels like they should. It isn't as heavy on "haha corporations bad!' as the first game, but character limit reached, fuck this game. i give up.

Not understanding what made fallout good even on the most basic level. It tries to ape shit that doesn't make sense in the setting like the raiders, even though it takes place in an empire at civil war filled with gigantic nerds, corporate drones, and proles who literally can't think for themselves. Drug addicts don't form paramilitary groups for the purpose of getting more drugs. Would've made more sense if they just made Sub Rosa explicitly evil. That and the scale is too small for what it's going for. Everyone is just fighting like it's WW1, there aren't even vehicles, and you have to walk everywhere. You can't even swim and there's no explication for why not.

didnt really improve on the first or fix the issues of the first one
Which is a sham, a sequel could have given the game character and color to make it stand out compared to the first one.
Fallout only took 2 games.
Halo only took 2 games.
So it failed despite getting the chances other huge franchises got. Which is kinda a sense the potential never really was there. Maybe it went too in on the gilded age, was too lacking in diversity of designs and environments, just didn't push the envelope anywhere and instead wallowing in retrofuture aesthetics in a way that just didn't stand out. It is frustrating how we have games like Eclipse Phase out there pushing the boundaries of scifi RPGs but scifi depictions in game media is stuck in a stasis while trying to say they represent progress.

I literally just finished a melee stealth build on the hardest difficulty and it was fine. Hardest part was the beginning when you're stuck with a shitty knife
>>
>>733684420
idk sort of not really
18 months is short dev cycle sure except the engine was already built and FNV had loads of the ideas of Van Buren and I forget which other shelved title - the world, factions and story were built decades ago decades allowing for them to be age like wine

Gay reddit writing and everyone is a lesiban black woman. Also it wasn't fun.

Ehh they didn't adapt Van Buren 1 to 1
Our boy Joshua Graham was supposed to be pure evil, probably the man he was before he got burned but in game the negative karma black hole of a companion
>>
>>733683449
Is that pops from regular show?

>An evil companion
Weird that 2,3, and 4 are the only ones that bother with that.

It still surprises me that bethesda added in a companion in 3 that outright has a backstory of raping the restaurant girl you meet while he had a shotgun pointed at her head.

>They refuse to kick your rapist out because he's useful for the town's survival
What the fuck did Todd mean by this

Todds an edgy guy, apparently.

It's fine its just very mid, like an actual 7/10 game.

The story is honestly the best part, and its jsut ok? The residual silliness just takes the edge off and makes me not care about the setting.
The companions are also just ok
>Murdohobo chick is fun as a joke, but she is literally just that joke; there is nothing else
>Mutant soldier girl is also ok, good even, but she could have had more than just 'the thing everyone said was going to happen happened, oh well thatnks for doing my companion story.'
>Grandma Splinter Cell is wasted potential, the idea is honestly cool, but the execution (and her faction) are just shit.
>Agent revenge is the most stock standard revenge bad plot you have ever seen (Which is fine, I guess, every RPG team needs a karth/alisatir)
>Judge Dread has a pretty good story, truth be told, but he can't carry the entire thing by himself

Is the gameplay is also just ok? Like yeah, the shooting is fine, but for me, I expect some sort of usp for your RPG FPS in 2025, I mean, we don't get any cool or fun abilities or powers at all.

So like I said, when everything is just ok, the experience is just ok. What is there to talk about?
>>
>>733683695
It's almost impressive that while no doubt pursuing diversity and uniqueness, they ended up making something that looks exactly the same. It really is just slop. Formless, shapeless, colorless slop absolutely bereft of passion and imagination.
>>
>>733691708
>the best part of the game is just ok
>overall it's a 7/10
You're spiritually a paid off IGN journo.
>>
>>733691708
How are the factions though? Whenever someone wants to yap about NV they talk about the factions and leaders. I have never heard a thread discussing them from OW 1 and 2
I would think that without the background of nuclear devastation they don't come off as having as strong a leg
>>
>>733691708
All in all it sounds like OW1. Just ok. Not a good game, but also not a bad game.
But OW1's cardinal sin was that it was boring and forgettable. Even a shit game is at least memorable, and you can derive some enjoyment from something outright bad. The worst thing any piece of entertainment can be is boring. If it's boring, why even bother? Why play it? Why engage with it?
I went in to OW1 with very high hopes, and I honestly cannot even tell you the name of a single NPC. A single quest. A single world. A single weapon. Nothing. If it wasn't for the fact that my brain stubbornly holds onto the memory of booting the game up for the first time, I could be convinced I never even played the game. I have no memory of anything that happened, so that's wholly possible.
>>
This is the only game ive ever dropped because of the aggressively unfunny dialogue. The open world was also boring and full of annoying bullet sponge enemies that arent very fun to fight.
>>
>>733691708
>>733692061
the factions are extremely bland with the constant joke being that everyone is a tired strawman zealot (except for you and your companions of course, if you really wanted to be a snob). Discussing who is better to rule the little group of planets is like discussing which option is better in rock paper scissors, every imaginable argument can be thought it and was probably a throwaway gag in the game.

The most fun I had (the gunplay is meh) is choosing Space Ranger dialogue choices and going full zealot to blend into the world while palling around with the zealot protectorate hammer guy (who is kind of shit in combat). They really overestimated how desperate players are to feel snobby over a shitty video game world.
