I felt this way about Spelunky 2. There's more content, but a lot of it always happens in a run (and there are a lot less random events like level feelings as a result). There's more to do in the game, but it ends up feeling very samey once you discover everything, even with the branching paths.
Doing the first world over and over got very repetitive since there's always the turkey guy, and the key & chest, and the boss.
