What's the intended method of fighting him? Even when I don't crouch stab in the corner, I just hold forward and mash B like a spaz and it works just as well.

Yeah, that's how I beat him too. Unlike darknuts, he has to lower his shield to attack downwards, making him easier than they are.
Beating him "fairly" is a meme too, since t just means throwing stray hits until he exposes himself anyways by crouching/standing up at the right time.
