The only way something like a goblin would work as a "companion" is if it was like 20 goblins that you use more like expendable minions ala Overlord that you replace with more goblins as they die. They could follow you into battle, but when battle happens they all have their turn at the same time and just mindless attack the enemy automatically. I've always like the idea of a CRPG where you have expendable minions as well as more traditional companions.
