What are your thoughts on Megaman X8?

It's alright. The criticisms against its gimmicky levels are valid, but I think it has enough decent stages. I don't think the game gets enough credit for how well balanced its hard mode is, it really makes use of the character switching and recovery mechanics to mitigate what would be unreasonable damage into something normal. Makes you play a little differently.
