If you think about it, him being a 'one-winged angel' makes no fucking sense. It's definitely just part of the design for the sake of coolness rather than it meaning anything.You might say it's because he's like a 'fallen angel', like a demon, and because he's the bad version of an Ancient, but it still makes no sense to specifically be 'one-winged'. They just threw that in there with some casual Abrahamic iconography to look cool.

The red cape, the gold claw, and the demonic wing. In turn Sephiroth was given a raven wing to contrast Cloud. For its purposes, this is fine. It shows Cloud and Sephiroth have a connection without being over bearing. And then Advent Children happened. Now that shitty wing, which he never had in FF7, is now canon to FF7. "One Winged Angel" isn't the theme that plays for most of the game. It's actually "Those Chosen By The Planet." The One Winged Angel was supposed to describe Safer Sephiroth who'd already absorbed a large amount of the Lifestream and was approaching godhood. But now that stupid fucking wing that didn't even originate in FF7 has followed him everywhere. Oh and since Nomura can't keep it in his pants for even a minute, his shitty Gackt character also has the wing. So the character, whose central motivation is that he's a great value Sephiroth made by a great value Hojo, beat Sephiroth to the one wing. Sausuga SE.
