why does this series have no competitors?
>>
>>733729216
Microsoft Flight Simulator?
>>

That's like comparing Forza Horizon and Mario Kart
>>

That's like comparing Xbox and Nintendo
>>
weren't there a few ace combat-likes during the 360/PS3 generation that sucked ass because none of them understood how to write a story
>>
>>733729216
There was Project Wingman that came out, and there used to be more games like it like that Aero Fighters and I would even consider Rogue Squadron very similar (just Star Wars instead of modern).

I think part of the problem is that mainstream chases realism more than anything these days, you see it a lot with racing games as well.
>>
>>733729519
Why the fuck does my murder from the sky simulator needs a story
>>
>>733729216
Japan's the only one that still does arcadey gameplay on modern platforms. Everyone in the west is either too focused on realism, or slaps air combat onto an existing all-purpose mil combat game like Battlefield.
>>
>>733729216
Why doesn't Elder Scrolls have competition? Why doesn't Armored Core have competition? Why do we have a million Souls-likes, Kart Racers, Sim Racers, Fighting games, and Hero Shooters? I wish I could answer that for you OP. I'm pretty sure it's because the general populace has no taste or something.
>>
>>733729625
Ah yes, Mario Kart World the best selling racing game of the past years is famous for its high focus on realism

There was a niche game that attempted to 'compete' with AC5. I'm sure you can imagine how well it went. Pic very related. Very short and basic game, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Outside of Mario Kart no one cares about unrealistic, arcadey racing games anymore. If there was actually market for it, you would see a new F-Zero game. Mario Kart is a game for toddlers anyways at this point, like a step beyond just arcadey
>>
>>733729216
its a flight simulator for retards. thats quite a small niche of customers

Zoomer here, I played this as a kid. When I first got a ps2 I was like 7 and this was one of the games my parents got me. It was awful and I never beat it but I still remember the first few missions.

I played ac7 and loved it and it reminded me of this old janky game from my youth. Now I find out it’s a cheap clone of the og series… wish I had a decent pc so I could emulate the old ac games.

Random side note but playing Mechquest, a random flash rpg back in the day, definitely primed me to enjoy Armored Core 6 and I find it funny that these two weirdly niche, similar Japanese AC franchises are the only things pushing me to get a pc again so I can enjoy the old sovlfvl titles one day. Thanks for reading my blog

I "kind of" care about them. I have sonic kart and still play around with it even though I suck ass at it and unfortunately bought it on the switch so split screen is a nightmare. I want the newer chocobo racing but I never manage to spot it on sale.

Mario Kart is a party game. Calling it a racing game is like calling Mario Party a platformer because some minigames involve platforming.

>wish I had a decent pc so I could emulate the old ac games.
How old is your PC? If you can run AC7 at 1080p, you should be able to run PCSX2 at 2x resolution.

>>733731125
I guess you highlight another big problem with arcadey racers in that that modern ones mainly exist largely as mascot racers that's more tied to branding. And even then, the Sonic racer and the Crash racer never really took off anywhere. Not surprised about the Crash one, but Sonic fans are usually so autisitcally obsessed I would expect that to have been a lot bigger.

Ubisoft tried really fucking hard to compete with ace combat and then just gave up after releasing like 6 flops back to back

Project Wingman surpassed it in every category except maybe graphics.

There was Konami's Air Force Delta/Deadly Skies.

It's also one of the few series where each instalment was released on a different console...
>>
the problem with Project Wingman is that it's not Ace Combat. Whenever I try to play that game I just think to myself "I wish I were playing Ace Combat instead" and quit

I get that feeling too, it's like playing one of those Souls clones. They might be good but you're always reminded that you're not playing the real thing

go play ace combat and then hawx
Its much more engaging when you are fighting your exwingman who defected to terrorist organization as nuclear missle is beeing launched, then fighting some nameless mercenary company

the problem with ace combat clones is that they are plain not fun to play
ace combat nailed the arcadey flight game, it's simple but enjoyable, no shortcuts, but no autistic complexity either
wingman got pretty close to the lower-grade ace combats like x2, but the rest are somehow worse than ass horizon

we aren't allowed to have nice things, so that'll never happen
>HEY BOSS! WHAT HAPPENED? YOU, THE WORLD FAMOUS NATHAN ZACHARY, DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THIS WEEK'S TALES OF TERROR!
i never noticed the two covers were almost mirrors of each other with that Brigand front and center (with tabletop livery instead of ingame)
>>
>>733735304
the right one better have permadeath
>>
>>733735232
Crimson Skies wasn't an AC clone. Back then you actually had multiple types of arcade flight games without stepping on each others' toes.

>>733734603
I have the opposite thing happen now, when playing AC7 I find myself missing PW's multiple special weapons, flight model, and lack of gimmick missions.

exactly, we had dozens of decent action flying games. PS2 and Xbox were kings for these.

Ace Combat games have like one memorable track on average, whereas Project Wingman's soundtrack is easily in the top 10 of all time.
>>
>>733741641
PW's soundtrack sounds like someone fed every Ace Combat track into a generative model.
>>
>>733742154
You haven't played either if you believe this.
