I get that they sort of also do the roll swap in pic related, but unlike a happy ending with Catherine's version, this is treated as a bad ending of Katherine rejecting him. Then again, I still think Rin's character and role just doesn't fit the original idea of the story to begin with. Erica fit Rin's roll better by being the same idea, but a more grounded character.
