I love the pseudo 50's aesthetic of Red Alert 1 that still played it at least a little serious. I just wish the game had more strategy beyond tankspam. There's so many units that never get used.

Unpopular opinion, but I prefer the first Red Alert because it took itself more seriously than later games. I also think the first Hell March sounds the best.
Iron Curtain ready
>>733751323C&C1 was a lot more brutal, the death sounds were great and units had less health so it was always a murder fest.
>Herr Hitler!>Ja, was is los? Ich habe keine zeit-ACK
These games are a LOT harder than I remember them being.
>>733747354Did they rape the children before or after the gas?
>>733751323yeah, i grew up with red alert retaliation (the ps1 port with the expacs and fmvs) and i never really played any of em past thattons of the voicelines and sfx like the tesla coils are firmly engrained in my head
WOOF!
>>733751889you're going to get murdered by a nigger very soon
>>733751889Neither. It was a test of a military weapon.

>>733751512kek yeah the soldier death sound sounded like a guy getting his guts ripped out. RA toned it down.
>>733746586Wrong game. For Red Alert 1 it was>FULLY CHARGED>LETS DANCE>GOT JUICE>POWER ON>BURN BABY BURN>EXTRA CRISPY>YAAAY
>given warez cd in the 90s>has red alert aftermath>to save space they removed all the fmvs and music>love the game and play the shit out of it>years later play the full game>holy fuck this musiccutscenes were okay, i prefer the tiberian dawn ones since nod was the coolest faction and kane was...well, kane (and it took me years before i even knew he was in red alert)

>>733746406On one hand, I miss C&C and am saddened by the lack of new releases. But on the other hand, I have all these fond memories of C&C, and their games are still available to play, and there's little chance of the franchise being soiled any further, that I'm kinda alright with the series ending.
>>733746812>>733747152>>733747196I can hear these posts.
>>733753394It's how I feel about Myth and how I felt about Marathon but unfortunately Bungie is raping that to death as we speak. I just hope they leave Myth alone which is a pretty good chance since RTS isn't profitable anymore.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYn07RveDXg

>>733746406the mission where you control a single spy unit to free Tanya... the only good force stealth mission in gaming, with the best mission end cutscene. how did they do it?
>>733746406redpill me on OpenRA
>>733747354I hate how red alert still kept a serious bleak tone even though they did some whacky stuff and then later went full whacky.
Cannot deploy here.
Six CPUs, me in the bottom right corner. Let's go.
>that one mission where you start in a facility with no base building and a handful of units>if you don't act in the first few seconds all your units instantly die>MISSION FAILEDThere's no way they didn't get someone who was playing for the first time.

For King and Country.
>>7337539573 was the worst unfortunately
>>733754305>There's no way they didn't get someone who was playing for the first time. That was something like mission 7 or 8 in the campaign, so you would've expected stuff like that by then.
>>733754305Age of Empires 2 did this too, but those missions were often so scripted it didn't often matter.I like CnC's overall design philosophy of allowing its engine to be pretty capricious in missions. a lot of the more finesse missions can be completely derailed by a single dog deciding to patrol one way instead of another. but that's true to life, so it's fine
>>733754191i just turtle and let them fight it out while i jam to the music

Here's some fun trivia from the old Petroglyph message board, written by one of the devs. The reason why Tesla's technology was present in Red Alert, but he himself was missing is because he made contact with the aliens after sending signal transmissions to outer space. This was also supposed to set up the alien invasion of Scrin in Westwood's version of future games.
>>733754191>bottom right cornerI'll never forget one of my first online matches in an RTS or any game at all was in I think 96 or 97 on this map. I had to have my dad's friend watch me play because I was not allowed on the internet alone, i was only like 7 or 8. I had that starting position and my opponent spawned on starting position 4 for some reason. We were just battling on that bridge. He eventually resigned when I beat his rush.
>>733747354>you're the only one left standing by the end of the campaign
>>733755817Nah, at the end you might be hero of the party, but Cain really owns you
>>733747354This is actually still one of the better portrayals of Stalin in any medium, the actor did a good job. Totally soulless but with moments of disarming joviality that make people think they're one of the safe ones he prizes.
>>733755890Yeah but I'm still alive and while I might be a puppet ruler for Kane, at least I'll live in luxury and enjoy the pomp and circumstance of "ruling" the coast to coast USSR. Those other motherfuckers are dead.
>>733755770lol that rulesI was very young when I played CnC and Red Alert, so later in life when I learned Tesla was a real person I lost my shit. You mean that shit actually happened?!
>>733753275>nobody here but us trees
>>733755817It doesn't quite line up perfect, but the Allied ending leading to Red Alert 2 and the Soviet ending leading to C&C 1 is still how I view it.
>>733753957i guess it's because the tiberian series was their serious stuff, so they felt like it'd be redundant to make red alert serious. tfw the soviets are behind laura palmer's death
>>733755890beats being another corpse on the pile of Stalin's shitlist
i wish they made rts games like command and conquer still. the remake was cool, but people stopped making maps and the AI was never modified so it's really exploitable.
>>733756046He claimed that he picked up radio signals which could've been some attempt of communication from an intelligent lifeform. Westwood's version is based on that.
>>733756346Someday I'm gonna make orangutan-centric games and it'll be glorious.
>>733756104It doesn't line up at all, why would Kane fight GDI in Europe when they already controlled the entire continent? And Word of God is that the GDI/Allied endings are always canon, RA1 leads to C&C1. The allies repurpose some soviet tech, and create a secret spec ops group to maintain global peace for another ~30 or so years, to prevent another world war. RA1 Counterstrike slightly alludes to this, the hidden Ant missions use the unit compositions that GDI would later use (APC, Humvee, Medium tank, Mammoth tank). Then they botch up Desert Storm and get shown on live TV (by Nod), their existence become public, at which point they are officially ratified as the United Nations Global Defense Initiative. Then a lot of time after Tiberian Sun, in an unmade C&C game called Continuum, Nod found a RA1 era Chronosphere. They manage to repair it and send back in time one of their psychic acolytes: Yuri. The RA2 installer even states that "ever since Yuri became Romanovs chief advisors, relations with the Soviet Union have deteriorated", so all of RA2 was Yuri's doing and Romanov was a puppet leader. So the timeline is, RA1 -> C&C1 -> Tiberian Sun -> C&C3 (the EA game used a lot of Westwood's ideas) -> C&C Continuum. RA2 is a splinter timeline.
>>733757245Decades later the USSR eventually collapsed and left Europe in disarray, leading to the GDI reestablishing democracy and the Brotherhood of Nod to be built up in the background. Also tiberium.
>>733755958The only mistake Stalin had made was not repress all these faggot libtards hard enough.
>>733757787>and the Brotherhood of Nod to be built up in the background. If Nod owned the continent, then they already would've been built up by the 90s and could step up after the USSR dissolved. And GDI would have had no way of having USSR tech like Mammoths, or even being able to operate in Europe, if Nod already controlled it all.C&C1 lore is that Nod only became a financial superpower and thus being able to operate openly by creating the first methods of refining Tiberium, turning them into a financial juggernaut overnight.
>>733751889They are r*ssians so i'm gonna go with both.
>>733746812affeermatev
>>733751141>me as a kidi need more silos to store all my credits so that i'll be able to build up my army later>me as an adulti'm an absolute fucking bot if i have any surplus amount of credits because that would mean that i'm wasting production queues, i'm leaving assets for the enemy to either capture or destroy and i'm not moving towards any strats to win the game
>>733751323RA1 was the first one I played and it's still the dearest to me. I loved the semi-WW2 alt history thing it had going on, such a great way to explore the "what if hitler <thing>" thought experiment. Plus the cinematics felt reasonably authentic.
>>733753119Fucking BANGER, I used to listen to this on loop
>>733758225Precisely my thoughts as well.
Incredible!
>>733751141I never understood what silos did, everything seemed the same with or without.
The animation for a soldier getting hit by a tesla coil cracked me up every time.
>>733758538it increases your credits cap per silo builtbut the thing is that in RTS you want your funds/credits/currency to be at almost 0 the entire time because you're always building something and making moves on the map which whittles down your and your enemies units
>pick up crate>it explodes, taking my mammoth tank with it
>get mild ptsd from the sound of the tesla coil powering up to strike
>we didn't get a Renegade sequel set in Red Alert 1
>>733759020I've finished Renegade again recently. It was buggy, janky, but cool.
>>733759428I liked seeing inside all the buildings, imagining what was going on in all the constructions you put up in RTSes was something I often did while playing as a kid
>>733759775>they have an indoor exercise arena for Nod troopers inside the Hand of NodThat was neat.
>>733760025And a combat sim room for firearms training.
>>733760326Yeah, the fake forest training area complete with the lake is what I was referring to. It's great stuff.
>>733754305>Objective: Run!
Unit lost.
>>733746406Generals mog Red Alert. Sorry for saying this out loud.
