-Surf>Pass up 9 other potential spots along the way>Alright champ, you got your Mach Bike, right?
Get secreted, bitchMy base is based
Seems like a good spot for a secret base
>>733749964It looks pretty secret to me.Also, there might be reasons for a secret base location beyond being easy to locate. For one, other people aren't likely to have that location and so their base probably won't be overwritten. I put my secret base here, mostly because I was using Ground/Water type pokemon and the secret base on the lake, in the route where it frequently rains, sounded like an appropriate place.

It's been awhile since I played the game. I remembered that it was a location on that route you needed Surf to visit, just kind of forgot which body of water it was in.
I didn't engage with this mechanic at all when I played Emerald for the first time last year. Seemed like a pointless waste of time.I can see why a kid playing on a gameboy 20 years ago would do it and have a good time, though.
>>733752246The point of Secret Bases was to mix information with some friends so that you can find their secret bases in your game. If you're playing the games now on emulator, there will be no way to mix games and so no point in setting up a secret base. Nobody will ever see the results. One of the best things in ORAS was that connecting online let you fill up all the secret bases with random people, so there were a bunch of find and fight their pokemon.I guess you could set up a secret base along some route so that you didn't need to run back to town to rest, heal, and access the PC, but I can't think of a location where that would be relevant. The volcanic ash is right outside a city, with easy access. Maybe if you're trying to grind Heart Scales? Or if you want to set up the base next to the berry farmer's farm to avoid needing to surf to it.
some people probably used that area to make a make-shift neighborhood with their friends. For me, it's this spot.

>>733749964>he got the acro bike
>>733752246Portable games are kinda supposed to be full of time wasting features. They existed to pass time during long car/bus/train rides, waiting for people to finish appointments, etc etc.The gen 2-4 era of pokemon was never about just finishing the game and calling it a day, it was more about having a world you could waste time in endlessly since you had nothing else to do.
>>733753289Oh shit i had no clue you could find friends bases or do online stuff this early. Although i was in like 4th grade at the time and online play was still a foreign concept till i got into runescape later
>>733754223For RSE, you needed to use a link cable to connect to a friend's game and you'd get their secret base, along with any other secret bases they had on their game. The newly arriving secret bases would overwrite old ones, but with so many bases in so many out-of-the-way places, the idea was that most people would probably put them in different locations so you'd probably get new ones each time. Or get undated ones, if the friend had updated their base since you'd last linked with them. For ORAS, it probably works the same, but it did so automatically with random bases when you connected the game online. I went online to get a female Wooper and suddenly found all the secret bases filled as a result. I then lost track of time and accidentally grinded my entire party up to Lv.90 checking them out and fighting them all. Fuck that one guy who had a Dark Void Giratina in their one base.
>>733754504Damn we had a group of like 5-6 of us in this apartment complex and we would all gather around on our sp/ds playing pokemon in the stairwell and i have no idea why we didn't use the link feature more oftenI still remember one of the few times we linked to fill out pokedex's and my buddy lent me his kyogre but had to go home before i could give it back. Got surprised that week with a move out and i felt so bad for having essentially stole his kyogre
>>733753289don't emulators have netplay or some shit, mixing should be ez now that you don't have to keep a cable on you
>>733754081Yeah, that's exactly what I thought and why I understand when videogames from decades ago have a bunch of things that seem "pointless" and timewasting. They were made so kids with a lot of free time would have something to do back then when you couldn't simply pull a smartphone out and have instantaneous dopamine hits.
>>733752246>I didn't engage with this mechanic at all when I played Emerald for the first time last year. Seemed like a pointless waste of time. It's casual meta progression. If you're just looking to complete the game to as a way to get it off your backlog it doesn't really add much value. It's there for people who reach post game and want to feel more immersed in the world.
