What is exceptional about Nier has almost nothing to do with his characters and is only partially about his setting. It's the non linear VN style format of the game, the cute tricks like recording you setting up the game and replaying it to you weeks or months letter as you finish it, the real ending being a shmup where you sacrifice your save data and the switching between various mediums to convey different kinds of stories.He has made anime and they were just ok. It's like kojima, he's a mediocre director but an innovative game director.
