Mainly because it turned into an action game where you can suplex zombies and make their heads explode. For a game to be scary you need to be vulnerable, not a super solider.

It was only scary to kids. Your question should be when did Resident Evil lose it's atmosphere and soul? 6 and 7 would be the start.

You are using the grenade launcher against enemies that can take your head off in one hit and if you miss they will, plus grenade launcher ammo is very limited so you are still vulnerable. The rocket launcher you only get for the last battle or as a bonus item after completing the game under certain conditions so doesn't really factor into most of the game.

No it wasn't, plenty adults and teenagers played it as well, it was a scary bhorror movie type of game.

I'm guessing what you're missing is the atmospheric suspense built up in the older games. The way games would set up for a scare and leave it ambiguous if or how it would pay off. I don't really think the newer games are "less scary," probably the opposite overall in terms of nail-biting intensity, but the above is less of an element in them now.
