It was supposed to be a Quake game, but retarded execs didn't think that Quake would sell well (despite them remastering the games and selling them to decent applaud a few years before hand along with Quake 2). That's why it has fucking Cthullu in a Doom game and a whole bunch of Lovecraftian beasts when they've never been in a Doom game before.

If you ask an older Gen X or older to play Wolf3d, Doom, and Quake in one sitting, they genuinely will not be able to tell you how the gameplay of the 3 are different beyond graphics, controls, and level design. If you ask a late millennial or younger you will get the same answer.

The fundamentals of what we call "gameplay" are only understood by a very narrow band of enthusiasts born in a very specific point in history that were trained in a multitude of other fields/crafts and brought all of it to the new medium. Its sort of like 2d animation, the people who know what made it great will all be gone soon except for indies who make money off of niche projects and rich fetishists

Japan and its infinite austists is basically the only hope, but theyve never made this style of game well
