They stopped making good games. It is that simple. XII was a disappointment, XIII was awful, XV was terrible, and XVI was barely even a fucking RPG. Squaresoft got me into gaming but there are very few games of SE I would consider good at all these days.
Most people would say that the company got worse once it was merged with Enix. But I legitimately believe the biggest reason is that the CEO keeps chasing trends that doesn't help the company at all and the desire for hyper realistic graphics, which causes their projects to go into development hell for over decade.

Over reliance on Final Fantasy resulting in them greenlighting what ever idea that was proposed, causing a sheer dilution in the brand and inability to capture the interest of younger generations while the millennial fanbase loses more and more interest unless you’re a Sonic or Pokemon tier autist that eats up any slop with the brand on.This same reliance on Final Fantasy always needing yearly to bi-yearly releases means other better IP’s with better creatives involved only end up seeing releases between 5-15 years.Leading to such stupidity as not capitalising on the success of games like NieR Automata which should’ve gotten a non gacha sequel years ago, or franchises like Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts announcing sequels just to go silent for years without any updates while again they shit more final fantasy slop on peoples plates because they refuse to let Final Fantasy go.People can blame the problem on stuff like Square listening to the West or trying to chase bad trends but the problem will always be putting all their eggs into one main basket and letting those eggs rot and stink up the brand, and now their Golden Egg. Final Fantasy 7, looks like just another rotten egg among a pile of awful eggs.

>>733764481This seems to be a common AAA problem, Ubisoft turned all their big titles into same bland open world collectathon slop and Nintendo is busy turning all of theirs into Tears of the Kingdoms. In gaming space you can only strike gold by diversifying and taking risks but this goes against executive and investor instincts because a lot of them are laymen who do not understand or appreciate the peculiarities of the market.

They basically left XI to die. The least they could do is release some sort of official XI: Classic with a revamped graphics engine and some QoL shit. Instead modern retail is dead and private servers are as bad as Ragnarok Online ones.
