The game that ruined a once beloved genre is now 9 years old and its horrid influence is still felt to this day.

Please say something bad about Hollow Knight, /v/.

Its not the developers fault you are now 45 and dont have the reflexes for Soul Master.

You are blaming Team Cherry for "ruining" a genre by releasing a single game, not Konami for ruining Castlevania or Nintendo for ruining Metroid for the past 15 years. If blaming HK helps you sleep better at night, after buying a 30$ amibo to unlock the soundtrack in your game, keep doing it. Sooner or later you will have to do some self critique or you will witness yourself keep falling down the rabbit hole of being a fanboy for companies and developer teams that don't exist anymore.

>>733767024
I cannot get over the map. This is one of those games where if you set it down for a period of time, you can't pick it back up because you have no idea where you are or what you were doing. There are enough moments confusion and backtracking in this genre because of the concept of accessing previously locked areas via keys or abilities. When you add in the idea of having to find pieces of the map, it's too much.

If only there was a way to put custom markers on your map, for future backtracking or to remind you of where you were supposed to go after you pick the game up again after a break, that would be great, right?

if you want to play Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night, it's extremely easy to find and emulate
no need to be a bitter tard

One of my favourite aspects of the genre is nonlinearity, (and replay value) so for me Hollow Knight was a breath of fresh air. It's a difficult aspect to do well, and most don't bother, especially if they're corporate or under budget constraints.
>>
>>733767024
I liked it
>>
>>733767024
The ONLY good metroidvania was the first one (Castlevania SotN), every other game in the genre is boring
(kinda related but the only good Metroid was Super Metroid too btw)

>It's a difficult aspect to do well, and most don't bother, especially if they're corporate or under
There are plenty of gaas and gacha games from big corporate with tons of budget available tho.

Yes, it is a souls-like first, metroidvania second.
No, I won't elaborate.

I still can't beat the last pantheon with all bindings, I mean I know I can, the patterns in this game are all easy and predictable. But it's just such a slog by the time I get to the last couple of bosses I start spacing out and fuck up
>>
>>733773874

And that's a good thing. Exploration and feeling lost is the whole point of the genre. People like you already made FPSs linear instead of doom-like and made JRPGs drop proper dungeons, don't try to also ruin metroidvanias.

Salt stricken, eh? Literally stolen form salt sanctuary, the best game in the so called metroidvania genre.
>>
>>733779660
Good games like Super Metroid evoke the same feelings without any of these problems because they are well designed.
>>
>>733767024
What genre did it ruin again? Hollowvanias?
>>
>>733779628
I never did em, never will. A boss rush like that isn't ever fun. When they dropped that shit I sort of checked out of the series altogether actually. Whenever something like that shows up it means they went all the way up their own ass and they're not coming back out again.
Sure enough silksong looked like a continuation of exactly that.
>>
>>733779903
silksong is a hollow knight dlc designed by "prepare to die" soulsfag circlejerkers. you know precisely what to expect.
>>
>>733767024
The more credit is given to these pretentious faggots the worse. The best thing you can say is reaming in silence.
>>
>>733767024
I loved Hollow Knight but Silksong was dogshit.
>>
>>733767024
It's slow, boring and has too much bloat for a Metroidvania.
>>
>>733767024
Fuckhuge map with slow move speed to pad game time. The most important aspect of a platformer is for moving around to feel good, and for Hollow Knight that only applies to constrained areas like White Palace where being faster wouldn't matter. It's the total inverse of most other popular games in the genre, which have both smaller maps and much faster movement. Even when you get the game's shinespark equivalent, it requires you to charge in place and loses collisions with most enemies.
>>
>>733779750
ultrakill is probably about to do it
>>
>>733767024
>Please say something bad about Hollow Knight, /v/.
It is pure, and I mean PURE, estrogenated r*dditslop. Down to the "hand drawn" (as if it fucking matters) style that makes everything round and soft and feminine and gay.
>>
>>733779750
>>733780575
Undertale is the og
But yeah HK is the other
>>
>>733767024
It's just kinda boring. I got the basic ending and beat a few of the extra bosses and I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. I don't see why it gets so much acclaim.
>>
>>733779987
Yeah seemed that way lol
The individual pantheons I was fine with actually but the last one that's just every single boss followed by a revamped final boss that you can only learn by doing the entire pantheon?
Yeah that's fucking stupid.
Not worth my time. I don't see the point of such things, it is downright absurd and I suspect a lot of people just abused save states to learn the revamped final parts because why wouldn't you? It's a waste of time.
>>
>>733780286
Holow Knight's whole thing was taking a minimalist approach to movement upgrade variety to promote the pogo. I guess it was kinda the game's version of the wall jump in Super? An ability that you innately have which opens up the whole map and lets you sequence break.

I always thought it was strange as fuck how they treat the double jump like some busted endgame ability.

Super Metroid had expansive movement upgrades though, so the comparison doesn't work.

>The map
Virtually every path you take ultimately ends you up back at City of Tears
>>
>>733767024
This game is good when comparing it to the abomination that is the sequel.
The devs couldn't even make a finished act 3 with 8 years and infinite money. Literally quantity above quality.
>>
>>733785292
Act 3 isn't as bad as unlocking act 3.
>>
>>733767024
The shitty map system and corpse runbacks are the worst things this piece of trash contributed to the genre
>>
>>733785292
Act 3 is just a better take on the Inverted Castle
>>
Was this game a meme? I see Souls + 2D Metroidvania and my eyes immediately glaze over.
>>
>>733785390
I mean, if you find it already annoying to unlock it, then how do you even view the rewards?
Most bosses are either pure shit (1 move like KHAN) or copy pasted. Two "new" zones that you see once.
The worst? Good luck doing 100% (which isn't even a true 100%) without using any online map. The game doesn't even give any zone % completion (unlike 99% of real metroidvania released in the last decade).
And what do they end the game with? A copy pasted boss who is a literal downgrade.

>>733785479
Wow, AMAZING. "A better" take from an almost 30 years old game! This is the power of skong...
>>
>>733785479
How many ubisoft-tier side quests did you have to do to get to the inverted castle
>>
>>733767024
Worst pacing of any Metroidvania ever. Horrible horrible horrible 0/10 start. It's boring for longer than the entire playtimes of other Metroidvanias and that's unforgivable.
>>
>>733773987
How was someone supposed to know?? This is simply bad game design.
>>
I just bought this game yesterday on psn.

I like the art of it. I think you have to play a metroidvania and explore to unlock the full map. combat is good / feels responsive.

I'm at the beginning of the game. Sounds fun so far. I want to enjoy it.

What are some good games (like it)?
>>
>>733786780
Finish the game before looking for something else to distract you.
>>
>>733786949
Sure thing. I bought Rayman legends for 3.99 and some other game for 2.49. Hollow Knight wasn't on sale but I thought it was a good game.

I'll try to enjoy this game.

These are the must plays you can play on playstation
>prince of persia lost crown

>castlevania aria of sorrow (through advance collection)
>hollow knight silksong

>that you can only learn by doing the entire pantheon?
You can practice against every individual boss, including that one in the statue room. You only need to face the boss to unlock its statue.
