I know this is the designated shitpost thread where everyone goes on and on about how their taste is superior cause they don't like a trend from like 6 years ago but I want to actually talk about something.
I feel like games marketing themselves as liminal, even going past the fact most are lazy griftjobs, can't be really scary cause they're too safe and curated. You know everything in it was designed to be kinda spooky. It can't surprise you.
I get my fill of that sense of wanderlust and discovery from exploring old maps for source engine games cause you really don't know what the fuck you're gonna get.

1) abstract and eerie empty architecture that doesn't make sense, slightly unnerving
2) you're stuck in that otherworldly void, you're not in the real world, you could die from starvation
3) + fear of unknown
if this combo wouldn't make you slightly spooked you are a retard with no survival instincts
>>
>>733775149
>survival instincts
Hope you have your survival instincts when I find your house and strangle you, fucking fairy
>>
It's supposed to recreate that dread you had as a small child wandering empty places that felt larger than they were to a small mind and prompted you to imagine things that weren't there.
Like a town under thick mist or a street in darkness lightened up by occasional lamposs.
I don't get the hate on liminal horror from people of my generation, we had the same fear of those spaces as kids. We had media portraying those fears like The Mist, Earthbound, Silent Hill on the top of my head.
Of course as fully grown adults we stopped being scared by such things in real life. We don't run in the corridor after turning off the light to evade the monsters. And it is true that the games attempting to recreate that fear tend to fail
But the desire to experience that fear again isn't to be mocked.
>>
I guess Forsaken Frontiers was kinda ok, for a extraction loot slop. But then, it kinda fails as muh liminal since it has monsters in it (and shit AI on top of that)

Anon, firstly, you need to change your mindset. There's no 'we' and there's no 'liminalfags'
And you've got nothing to gain from policing what people like either.
It's just a genre of horror. What do you like? Slashers? Religious themed shit? It's all slop. Horror has always been the sloppiest genre. It's got the lowest barrier of entry and the highest chance to make it big. Half of the big hollywood directors made it big with shlocky 70's slashers and basically all writers in the past 200 years payed the bills writing for some shitty horror periodical. Horror is the one genre you can't be pretentious about cause the whole point is making you piss your peepee pants.

>what is scary or even slightly intimidating about picrel
It's a warm summer day and you're making your way to a nearby supermarket.
But you suddenly realize you made a wrong turn and ended up in an unfamiliar alley.
You turn around to make your way back and everything goes dark for just a split second.
Your surroundings have changed. It's not the tiled floors, walls and ceiling that you notice first, but it's the smell.
The sharp smell of chlorine shocks you from your stupor as you start to panic.
Where am I? What happened? Did someone kidnap me? Was I drugged? A sudden solar eclipse? Alzheimer's?
No, you don't feel sleepy or fatigued. If anything, you feel just the way you did when you were back in that alley.
It takes some time for you to gather yourself, as you decide to explore the only path forward.

It only took a few hours for you to stop shouting if anyone's around.
The strange twists and turns of this place makes it hard for anyone but yourself to hear your voice.
You stop and sit down next to one of the numerous pools you've encountered so far.
You feel thirsty, but the only water around is heavily chlorinated; not something you'd want to drink.
Then you notice.
This pool is different.
How did you manage to miss all those swimming rings floating gently on top of the pool's water?
You jump back up and hastily make your way deeper into the complex.

It's been about a day, you think. The thirst is unbearable.
All the new pools you've encountered have swimming rings in them now.
And every series of rooms connecting each one has been the exact same every since the first one you encountered.
You broke some of the standing lamps to see if you were looping, but the next ones were perfectly fine.
How long will you be able to continue like this? What if you don't make it out? What if the exit is all way back at the start?
The standing lamps in the distance taunt you. You feel like you're going insane.

The fact that most "liminal horror" has some stupid muppet chasing you around corridors is the greatest evidence for how stupid it is.
The whole point is that there's no one around, but thats not scary so they have to add a generic monster and chase sequences

I'll admit I haven't looked much into it, but the moment you add creatures or sentient anything it falls apart.....but you cant make streamerbait without it so there you go

The concept of infinite liminal spaces was in the beginning scary because it was supposed to be a place you find yourself suddenly, like waking up already inside or taking an elevator that goes there (glitch in spacetime), finding out the elevator is now gone/not working and you're trying to find an exit in a seemingly endless space with also no food in sight (there might be water machines or water filled rooms). But that's all. No entities. Nobody else. No traces of anyone ever being there. Just you, an unknown place that shouldn't exist - it's familiar yet impossible at the same time. That was the whole point.
It suffered the same fate as SCP later on - trannies and underages always destroy things even that they initially like.

Alone and in silence. They're afraid of silence, as ever since they remember there was a talking screen right in front of them. No wonder "ADHD" is normal in that generation as they constantly strive to be flooded with useless information, just to drown any and all remainders of their internal voice (thinking). These are the retards who have different things playing on screens, different on headphones or speakers. That shows later on when they claim to have played this or watched that and you realize they don't remember most of what they have seen, or remember a mix-up of signals. Silence scares them, liminal spaces are all about that. Yet, they can't imagine true silence, so they insert some retarded Cold Steel-type OC into these settings.

As an idea, backrooms situation is pretty spooky to end up in IRL. Unknown dimension, zero idea if there's way out (besides suicide), no food, no water absolutely no fucking idea if there's no killy things.
As a video game, there's just too much degrees of separation between you and situation for it to be "scary". So, some people decided to throw in cliche crap like Chuck E. Cheeses with hyperrealistic blood to chase people around, or making everything there dark as shit, or 200db noises or jumpscares. Other people, like game in the OP, just made a bunch of mazes using the vibes so other people can just walk around and vibe, too.
I don't really think there's anything wrong with either approach, since both are just trying to do something with a dud that doesn't work by itself in videogame medium. What I find wrong, however, is pretending to be/being retarded about the backrooms idea and trying to frame it as being afraid of space itself (pools, office rooms in example) in a vacuum.

It was a post about places that feel weird, with a list of examples. The response was basically this:

>SOME of these feel weird because they are liminal spaces - spaces that exist only as an in-between for other spaces

>The REST of the list feels weird because they are stripped of their usual context, like a school after hours

This game is clearly the latter but something got lost here in the retelling

>The complex: found footage
Very short but it's the closest to the original backrooms post, it's practically a walking sim but that was the original idea, kind of like getting lost in the desert.

You vastly overestimate the amount of people who understand the concepts of "infinity", "parallel" and "dimensions".

Boomers don't understand because they never had swimming pools

>Lack of constant audiovisual stimulation confuses and terrifies zoomers.

>>733779148
Zoomers seem to think it’s just another place to get chased around in by faggy Five Nights at Freddy’s knockoff monsters.
>>
Are you saying this is a place where there's not constantly loud yelling joggers around me? AAAIIIIIIIIEEEEE BUT THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE

I never got into liminal horror, but I do really like the dreamlike aesthetic.

there is one though

I don't think it's DLSS, I don't really know what it is, but I'll just assume it has something to do with multiple light sources being fucky in there

As has been said many many times the horror doesn't come from being alone in an empty building, it comes from being alone in a space that your mind knows something is very wrong with, and the slow realization that you're trapped in it with little to no hope of escape and no means of sustenance
The Backrooms (the original version) is basically a posh version of the Paris Catacombs except there are no exits to the surface.
>>
>>733776981
Yes gay and retarded.
>>
>>733781728
Normal people don't like to be alone. Humans are flock animals.

LE TRAVELLER US BONEZ R WAITIN FOR URS LMAO

Real horror is the realization people like you are allowed to vote
>>
>>733773796
reasonable people are generally quiet
>>
>>733784565
That doesn’t mean we thrive on constantly having people and noises shoved in our faces.

Anyway, humans are not a monolith, there is a whole variety of temperaments and preferences. There are a ton of people out there who find the simple act of going grocery shopping to be unpleasant and stress-inducing.

I'm a zoomer and that unironically looks comfy to me

How to get over my fear of liminal spaces?

AYEEEEEEEEE I-IS THAT A P-P-P-POO-POOOOOOOOOOOOL
>>

I can't understand that. How hard is it to walk to the corner store and pick up a carton of milk? You don't even have to talk to the cashier, just give them your money and take the change.
>>
>comfy
That's the first word that comes to my mind as well. These often look like they'd be fun to explore. I fucking love clear water.

Marble hornets is closer to 20 years old than 10. It's time to let it go, old man.

Unironically are there any walking sims like this played straight without the monsters?
Makes me think of how I imagined some areas in Yume Nikki would look in 3D.
>>
>>733790287
Yep
>>
>>733771610
I'm too scared to play those but I like Backrooms (or other rooms) videos on YouTube where I can squint my eyes if it gets too scary
