Only Castlevania games can be called Metroidvanias
If any other 2D platformer has exploration, backtracking and power ups they should be called Metroid-likes
>>
Shut the fuck up you obnoxious debate obsessed video essay watching underage moron. Make a thread about a game you want to discuss instead of this endless series of meta baiting for engagement because that is the closest thing to social interaction you get. God this board is fucking insufferable now that it's mostly zoomers.
>>
Maybe if they have metroid and elements, they should be marketed as metroidvania-likes
>>
>>733778051
They are action adventure games saar
>>
AC = Assassin's Creed
>>
>>733778224
dude I'm 36, a zoomer wouldn't even remember this debate existed
you sound like a schizo ranting about zoomers out of nowhere
>>
Well at least you're not one of those faggots still trying to make "search action" a thing.
>>
>>733778461
Go back to your video essays you insufferable faggot.

The term you're looking for is search action
>>

I just wanted to make a funny thread
not everything is "trolling" or "engagement"
take your meds
>>
>>733778224
>oh no hes talking about video games
>>
>>733778051
I refuse to cal it search action because that's retarded so I will continue calling metroidvanias metroidvanias, it clearly gets the point across just like rougelike even if it isn't 100% accurate
>>
>>733778761
>metroidvanias
Thats redundant both games are the same kinda thing, we dont call turn based jrpgs dragon fantasies
>>
>>733778689
Fuck off retard.

>>733778664
>I just wanted to make a funny thread
>funny
>endless repeated semantics retardation instead of talking about the fucking game
>funny
Fuck off retard.
>>
>>733778664
Ignore him, you bring up a good point and to be honest I feel like videogame genre names and categorization is kinda terrible.
>>
Anyone who isn’t a giant faggot just calls them action platformers.
>>
>>733778051
The evolution of language is determined by use, not "logic". If it conveys a meaning enough people recognise then it's good enough. Metroid-likes are called Metroidvanias and Metroidvanias are called Igavanias.
I will rail against rougelikes vs rougelites thoughbeit.
>>
>>733778836
They're both the progenitors of that type of gameplay, effectively the mother and father though Metroid 1 and Castlevania 2.
>>
>>733778051
This is the weakest in the Resident Evil trilogy and I'm tired of pretending it isn't
>>
>>733779016
We dont call platformers Mario's do we?
>>
>>733778940
Except that's an umbrella term that can be applied to any action oriented game that's a platformer. Metroidvania is specific to games that features a big interconnected map that requires backtracking to access something you couldn't previously access once you've acquired the proper power up.
>>
>>733778051
Even at its peak this is such a stupid and pedantic argument to have. Metroidvania is a stupid name but it stuck because it's generally known what it means. It explains the design in its name and that's as far as this discussion ever needs to go.

I don't know which part of this you don't understand, OP. Metroid wasn't even the first metroidvania.
>>
>>733778836
That's language for you, there's no strict rules. You're free to call it search action and I'm free to think you're just being contrarian when you do
>>
>>733778836
>dragon fantasies
That's a cooler name then turned base RPGs tho
>>
>>733778051
IMO the -vania part of metroidvania is the rpg elements. which suck and I hate them.
>>
>>733779614
Wrong. Most metroidvanias don't have RPG elements and they don't need to.
>>
>>733778051
Metroid really doesn’t have anything of what I like in igavanias.
>>733778940
That would include all classicvania and zero igavania.
>>
>>733778051
Igarashi already uses the term Igavania to describe this subset of Castlevania titles, they should just dump Metroidvania as a term completely.

>>733779614
But the Vania part is superflous, Metroid without the Vania is still Metroid, Symphony of the Night without the Metroid part is now just a 2d action RPG where progression is now gated by story progression and not equipment progression opening up exploration.
The vania should never have been tacked on, and that's entirely because it gives completely unearned credit to Castlevania.
>>
>>733779203
>>733779738
That’s the point. A good descriptor should be broad enough that even if some retarded zoomer somehow has never played Metroid or Castlevania they can at least get the gist of “oh it’s a game where you jump around and fight things” and THEN if they care enough to go deeper than that you can get into some having more emphasis on the rpg/exploration elements.
>>
>>733780141
We're even changing genre descriptors to appeal to wider audiences now
>>
>>733778051
>they should be called Metroid-likes
Why? Most of them are based on SotN and have very little to do with Metroid.
>>
>>733779658
>Most metroidvanias don't have RPG elements
Yes they do
>>
>>733779658
A metroidvania without rpg elements isn’t a metroidvania.
>>
>>733780205
Nothing is changing to appeal to anyone “action platformer” has been a genre for decades the autistic specifics came later.
>>
>>733780616
Then there's no problem with continuing to call them metroidvanias
>>
>>733780708
If you want but I’ll refer you back to >>733778940
>>
>>733780940
Action platformer is vague and can refer to plenty of games that don't have the specific type of gameplay that metroidvania clearly defines, you know what it means and I know what it means, if you insist on using vague language so that "retarded zoomers" can understand you, that's on you not the rest of us.
>>
>>733780452
>>733780528
I don't know what to tell you. You're just incapable of analyzing and parsing game design. You're retarded, basically.

Disagree, but I also have an issue with the term Metroidvania as it's used now.

Games that use the exploration foundation of Metroid but DO NOT have RPG mechanics (Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, most modern "Metroidvanias") should be called Metroid-likes.

What Castlevania added to Metroid's formula was the RPG mechanics, with loot drops, equippable items, leveling and experience, stats, etc. If it doesn't have those elements, it's not a Metroidvania.

The only actual Metroidvania I can think of that isn't in the Castlevania franchise is Bloodstained. I'm sure there are ones I don't know about, but it actually has all of the elements SotN added to the genre to make it something unique enough that it needs its own label.

As I said here >>733781862

Name more than a handful of games that have the RPG elements alongside the Metroid exploration elements. You say they're "based on SotN and have very little to do with Metroid," yet the only part most of these games copy is what SotN inherited from Metroid.
>>
>>733781141
>metroidvania clearly defines

Metroidvania doesn't clearly define shit. If you don't know what Metroid or 'vania is then it's a completely meaningless and nonsensical word.
>>
>>733782259
How many people have actually played or even seen Rogue, do you think? Yet everyone knows what rougelike means
>>
Mapventure games
>>
>>733778051
People that hate post-lordvessel dark souls are 100% regurgitating some other retard's opinion from here and have either not played the game or are simply too fucking stupid. I hate that it's now considered the general consensus

What a Metroidvania is, in my book, is defined by the upgrades you get in the original Metroid (and less so its sequels).
The difference being that Metroid upgrades are almost all direct additions to Samus' core moveset. Every item you get only opens up new areas because of how it affects the base moveset and ability to traverse, and it is not, crucially, like in SOTN or Zelda, a straightforward key for a specific kind of lock.
Ice beam (in the NES original especially) is perhaps the gold standard for what every Metroidvania upgrade should strive to be.
>it massively expands Samus' movement and combat abilities
>it allows traversal through specially designed areas
>also allows traversal through many additional areas through clever and creative use
The point is, it radically changes traversal and combat in every room in the game after you get it, it isn't just a lock and key, it's a core platforming mechanic you get. This is what adventure-platformers or metroidvanias are about, and I wish people would stop calling adventure games that aren't platformers metroidvanias because they aren't.

Dude, Izalith is literally unfinished. You can bitch about other critiques of the second half, but some things are simple fact.
>>
I personally call them all fucking boring. SOTN and La Mulana are the only good ones. And I blame it all on the Metroid parts.

I always felt metroidvania was an offense to metroid.
Sad to see how popular the term got, but oh well.
