A lot of the games I play are indie titles; 7days 2 die, Windward, Crosscode, Hero Siege, Road Redemption. Those titles are not in danger of disappearing. On the other hand, I also play live service stuff like Darktide, Helldivers 2, and a smattering of gacha shit, among other "online only" games. It'd be nice if some companies sunset these online only games with proper offline patches. Phantasy Star Online BB is a great title where you can set up your own server (if you want), but the magic of that game is in the multiplayer, which you can only really feel in a meaningful sense with other online players, so recreating that feeling in an offline-only mode isn't something you can do solo. I'm sure that after enough years pass, I'm sure PSOBB will fade into obscurity, and the last bastion of players who remember playing it originally on the Dreamcast will either pass away or otherwise lose interest and no longer play the game. It's the end of an era for games like that. Kinda like how you can't recreate that Halo or CoD lobby experience from the early 2000's. You can try to recapture it, but that heyday is a bygone era.
Support GOG if you care about game preservation.
i've come to accept that physical discs for videogames will no longer be supported. xbox and sony will definitely ditch it in the next console generation. i don't know about nintendo. part of me says they'll still do physical media for one more generation then just go full digital the next. i've already bit the bullet and switched to PC permanently a year ago after being a console babby for 30 years.i will miss buying and selling games.

>>733782354I do appreciate all the good GoG does for sure. Most of my library came from giveaway codes for that site.>>733782673 It may require some recontextualization for "ownership". All of my friends who were "anti-piracy" back in 2010's all own Steamdecks or hard drives filled with emulated titles across multiple console generations. They also own a significant amount of physical media, but their personal collections of digital media are particularly impressive. In the future, your ownership of digital media will fall upon you to preserve. That's kind of a scary thought, but on the other hand, having esoteric knowledge and lost media that only you possess will make certain titles more sought after. >>733782974>Just accept they're temporary and enjoy them in the moment and move on before the servers shut down. That's pretty much how it is. I'd love to go back to TF2 in 2008, but that game has been gone for a long time (As far as I'm concerned).
