Implying the Dreamcast had survived until the end of the sixth gen.
What do you think would've been the top graphics after optimization?

My guess is 2003-2004 PS2
>>
I dont really think dreamcaat was capable of any better graphics than shenmue 2

Dreamcast visuals have aged better than PS2. It can't do the complex rendering techniques of later PS2 games, but native VGA 480p looks much more pleasing than blurry PS2 graphics

we already saw the upper limits of what the dreamcast was capable of

Probably late PS2 games still couldn't do everything available to them via the Emotion Engine bef

Dreamcast wouldn't even be able to run something comparable to Gran Turismo 3 (2001).

Rayman 2 on Dreamcast is one of the most beautiful games ever made

Prince of Persia Sands of Time.

Probably, but I bet it would have gotten a better looking RE4 in two discs

That's basically the same environment map technique that used to be done in software on 486s. The dreamcast didn't have the best CPU, but it's plenty powerful enough for that. A typical way of handling it was to do a spherical projection of the surrounding area, then with a bit of very simple math you take the normal from the reflective surface's vertexes and map it to a point on the sphere map. This is then just handed to the texture mapping unit and blended with the underlying geometry.
Take screamer:

The math for that is 1:1 identical, what's different is artistry. The screamer devs just don't have the talent GT had and so they are wasting the trick on something that looks garbage.

Nah. The PowerVR it used had a bunch of fancy fixed function rendering techniques but because it was the lazy port and low budget console nobody used them. There's demos showing it doing hardware assisted bump mapping. No commercial game ever used it AFAIK.

>GTA III finally gets ported to Dreamcast
>15fps just driving around
>extremely aggressive LODs (with an ODE many times faster than the original drive)
>downgraded grainy textures
I don't know why people expected a 1998 hail mary to be anything more than that, but the mythologising has gotten tiresome

You mean the unofficial port or the unfinished beta?

Dreamcast running on a VGA CRT monitor still looks unbelievably good.

I could see the Dreamcast improving and running a Burnout 1, Sands of Time and maybe Gran Turismo 3-tier games, but not Burnout 3, Shadow of Colossus, God of War or Gran Turismo 4-tier games.

Xbox.

Dreamcast would've been sorely under-powered by 2004, requiring a mid-generation upgrade. Sega really should've kept the 3DFX design they had going and waited until 1999 for a worldwide release. Pushing it out into Japan first where the Saturn was doing ok was retarded.

Not really. Gamecube would've still raped it.

What doomed the Dreamcast?

I know a DVD drive was planned, would pairing that with a more powerful CPU like the Sega CD been enough to carry it to the end of the gen?

Dreamcast wouldnt even be able to do 2001, 2002 ps2. Mgs2

The transition to 3d was one of those things you had to get right.

16MB's of overall RAM was a rough limitation. All the polygons had to be stored in the 8MB VRAM too due to how the GPU worked.

There wasn't much left to push unless you wanted to compromise textures heavily.

No one would've bought a separate drive for their system, at least not in numbers to convince devs to target game development for it.
>would pairing that with a more powerful CPU like the Sega CD been enough to carry it to the end of the gen?
Again no, splitting your audience like that is suicide.
