Uhm... yikes!

Hey, game developers. Maybe don't... okay?
>>
I have literally never understood why people care about slurs so much

They're just words, man. Who gives a fuck what people call you.
>>
>>733803427
This line is fanfiction. So no not the developers, it's the translators who barely count as part of the team.
>>
>>733803427
is this in the original script or is it one of those translation mods?
>>
>>733804156
I'm not certain, but I'm *pretty sure* the developers/publishers have to ok the translations of their own games before they release it in those language regions.
>>
>>733804752
You think the developers read the translated script? Maybe the script translated back into japanese so they can check? It's just not practical. Reality is they trust the proper they hire. It's not strict, which is why you have cloud tricking you into attacking the scorpion while its tail is up.

*Trust the people they hire
>>
>>733804156
If FF7's script mattered, there would be a proper translation by now.
>>
>>733804158
That's the original translation, but the original Japanese says
>ちょっと!エンギでもないこと言わないの!
エンギ doesn't mean retarded, it means dramatic.
>>
>>733803427
And then they ruined Tifa by covering her up with a sports bra and turning her into a boring blushing "teeheehee" character

I'll never understand how the war on "retarded" made it into the mainstream. There are always gonna be whiny ultralibs trying to get us to stop saying "bitch" because it's offensive to women or something, but since when do people listen to them? How did this get so much traction?

I think it's when news stations started calling it "the R word". That's when everyone decided they had to stop saying it because now it's being treated like the nigger word. And now people feign unbelievable offense at hearing it despite being totally cool with it for 20 years.
>>
Tifa told him to quit bitching. perhaps the translator was foreshadowing how Cloud is a braindamaged tard, though
>>
>>733805553
Lolno, 縁起でもない is a set phrase that means unlucky

I remember at one time there were people trying to go after the word "lame" because it's offensive to the disabled or something.
Losing that one would kill me. It's just too ingrained in my vocabulary to avoid.

Localization, not even once
>>
>>733805553

What >>733805904 said. Pretty sure that's 縁起 not 演戯
>>
>>733805553
She said don't jinx it, to Barret btw
>>
>>733803861
>>
>>733805972
It's not even localization. It's a rewrite.
>>
>>733805904
>>733806052
So did the translator have no idea what it meant and just made a blind guess?
>>
>>733806240
Potato, potato.
>>
>>733803427
Would you stop acting like a retard and not post?
>>
>>733806301
Welcome to localization
>>
Its the best line in the game
>>
>>733806301
A single guy had to handle the entire script by himself over the course of 2 weeks iirc, so yeah. He winged it.
>>
>>733806301
You can't really know without asking the translator directly. Transparency is a huge issue, because one hand you want the translator to be invisible, but at the stuff like OP becomes impossible to understand, because the process is a blackbox.
>>
>>733806972
Also, and I hate to be fair to localizers, but most of the time they just get a sheet of lines they have to translate without context, which is the most horrible, nonsensical way to do translation.
>>
>>733803427

ugh oof owchie this game did not age well, i better warn bluetumblr about this
>>
>>733803427
I remember times when it was normal to call others retarded when they did stupid shit and for that reason kids grew up to be tougher. now kids are weak sissies and they will never truly grow up into real men.
>>
>>733804156
The FF VII translation was done by Sony, and Sony is a japanese company.
>>
>>733805762
i'm so glad my country is less anal about this stupid shit and normies still see you as a blue-haired pansy cunt if you bitch and moan about someone saying our equivalent of "retard" or "mongoloid"

I wouldn't consider that to be fair. If anything it makes it worse because they have to know the translation is a hack job. A sheet of lines with zero context, that can't be considered professional. But then they'll talk about localization is an art and how you need to be a good writer to be a good translator.
>>733807580
8-4 is also a japanese company, yet you can find project managers saying shit like pic related. So, being based in Japan doesn't mean much unfortunately.

the people angry at words are willingly enslaved to them

retard? faggot? nigger? It's a yoke they don't want to be released from. they love the burden
>>
>>733805762
then people just start calling actual retarded people something else and that naturally becomes derogatory slang too
>>
>>733803861
autism. and i mean your pov not theirs
