How good is it for a fan of Xcom?

I didn't play the story but I like spinning up a sandbox career every few months and progressing through the mechs. Do note it has a memory leak that makes itself known after a few hours of consecutive play.

I liked it a fair bit, my biggest complaint is that without mods you're locked to only ever deploying one lance (four mechs), and by the endgame you're getting huge quantities of metal thrown at you every single mission so you feel forced to run nothing but the biggest baddest mechs on your dropship all the time. There are boatloads of cool and interesting light, medium, and not-quite-so-heavy mechs that become rapidly obsolete when the game becomes all about stuffing as many tons of armour and firepower as possible into the four slots you're able to deploy.

There are also a couple of ridiculously autistic mega mods that completely overhaul everything that are a real rabbit hole to get lost down if you feel like you want more after trying the base game.

QRD on Battletech? Is it real time? Are any of the mechs superspeed?

It's tactical turn-based

In many ways it is a simplistic game where you're often doing the exact same thing across different worlds, but with fancier mechs and equipment. There is some genuine variety in build and tactics though. Setting up powerful melee mechs can be good fun, or you can even go for super long-range/indirect fire with a spotter. Laser behaves differently than ballistic, than missile, than flame, melee, or railcannons. It's all differentiated fairly well, and I find most of the equipment is useful in some way or the other. It really scratches an itch for setting up your own mercenary company. There's crew interaction events dictated by their personality traits in both the campaign and freeplay mode, so your mechpilots can actually come to mean something to you, since some will come and 'go' while others might last the whole game with you and accomplish some unique feats.

Yes and use mods at your leisure.
Roguetech is a full bucket of tabletop rule autism closer to MegaMek to say at least.
