>gameplay
>basically Frontiers gameplay but boost works differently where you can’t hold it down anymore. works like a burst of speed.
>buggy af physics and broken spindash move (SA - like)
>cyloop returns with same name
>power boost returns with max rings
>same combat system returns albeit much more simple and more button mashy
>melee enemies, turret enemies, ranged enemies, platforming-only enemies, big enemies, flying annoying fucks that cannot be easily locked onto (knockback and stun lock shit fuck asss)
>easy af combat no challenge except for big enemies and flying fuckers
>button mashing goes brrrrr
>same Frontiers open-zone design seen in Frontiers and Shadow gens, much more cleaner and closer to shadow gens tho
>very vertical level design
>some enemies encounters can be easily ignored, special ambush encounters that CANNOT be ignored.

> More Info

>I got invited to playtest of new Sonic game in November 2025.
>temporary title screen with a blue sky background with 'Sonic Eclipse' written on it

>no story, straight into gameplay with objectives to complete for my playtesting period
>annoying-ass Navi-like npc that looks like a cross between a scroll and a Luma from Mario
>Navi-npc freezes you mid-gameplay to explain every single little small things
>new upbeat sonic voice direction, still sounds to be Roger Craig Smith
>complete objectives around this giant floating island with ruins on it (sonic frontiers 2 amirite)
>main objective was to activate temples scattered around the island + smaller islands.
>must play simple minigames before activating a beacon
>flower buds looking NPCs scattered around the island and in a town-like area with trees.
>these NPCs give you side quests like 'climb to the peak on the island', 'find 5 fruits', and 'race to this spot in five minutes'.
>no returning Sonic characters from what I’ve played/seen
>rewards you with rings, exp points, or badges.
>some NPC need to be found or rescued by fighting mandatory enemy encounters
>new chao/koko-like things can be found around the island in various places. Looks like plant saplings
>15 found gets you a fruit and so on.
>fruits can be consumed for exp

>Upgrades and badge system
>need exp + rings to unlock new moves
>moves can be upgraded
>can upgrade boost, strength, and ring capacity
>new badge system that basically works like Hollow Knight, badges can be earned through NPC quests, shops, or found in the overworld.
>extra boost badge, acceleration badge, strength badge, and cyloop badge.
>badges can be upgraded, idk how because I didn’t get to play for long.
>up to three badges can be equipped at a time, cannot change while moving or while in combat
>only one badge slot is available at the start; level up to unlock more slots
>>
>New dimensions gimmick
>After activating all the temples you get sent to this new world called the ‘The Eclipse’
>dark/purple looking ass place
>cannot go back to first island until you complete all five levels in ‘The Eclipse’
>levels are accessed via rifts scattered
>reused level themes from Gens, Forces, and Lost World(?)
>fairly long levels
>once you complete all five levels, there’s a long, long, long, frustrating enemy gauntlet that consists of five waves of pure bullshit (fuck you you flying fucks)

>Music
>many different genres heard like EDM, Jazz, and Hip-hop
>freeroam music is mostly instrumental and more like Frontiers
>seems to evolve when you activate a temple
>’Eclipse’ level music is like typical boost Sonic music with lyrics
>Combat encounters have a ton of variation. Rock, jazz, hip-hop, and EDM. No repeated music.
>’Eclipse’ enemy gauntlet has unique music akin to DMC. Heavy metal sounding with upbeat edgy lyrics to match

>First boss(?)
>after enemy gauntlet in the Eclipse, one final rift opens up that takes you to the boss fight
> boss fight plays like something from unleashed
> your navi-guide gets kidnapped by this giant purple sandworm looking thing and you have to chase the worm down to rescue the mouthy fucker.
>you basically chase down this giant sandwom thing through a dark purple tunnel with crystals
>punishing QTEs.
>Sonic rips apart the worm thing in final QTE and rescues the Navi-guide fucker
>My playtesting session ended after the boss cutscene ended, literally a cutscene with Japanese text and red 'TEMP' plastered ontop, with a ‘End of Playtest’ Screen
>title screen did change to what I assume is the second ‘island’, looks like a large steampunk city.

>end of playtesting
>>
>gets post-playtest survey that asks about the playtesting session as a whole, bugs report, suggestions, and questionnaire.
>gets asked to pick the best sounding name for the game I just played
>Sonic Eclipse
>Sonic Odyssey
>Sonic Worlds
>Sonic Prism
>Sonic Nexus(?)
>Sonic Rift
>and a bunch of others that I forgot
>Picked ‘Sonic Odyssey’ bc that sounded cool af

And uhh yeah thats it. Have fun with this info you lunatics :P (or not.. if you choose not to believe me baka.)

Obviously very unfinished and buggy af from what Ive played so I don’t expect this game to be released until late 2027 maybe during holidays. I honestly did not enjoy at all what I played, the open zone was cool for the first hour until the side quests and side content got very tedious. The combat was unengaging as fuck, very button mashy, no challenge at all apart from those flying fuckers.
