we have spent the past 10 gaming years living in stagnation. the biggest new genres are battle royale and extraction shooters but they're offshoots of dayz which we played over 10 years ago. everything is open world, everything is bloated, and fun has been optimized out in order to sell battle passes and loot boxes.

Gaming really started to get bad when it became widespread. Games like Halo or Call of Duty were created to appeal to the lowest common denominator and were extremely profitable because of it, which then led to everyone trying to recreate their success. The only salvation is in total collapse. Nothing can be salvaged. Before a renaissance can occur, the industry must face total oblideration. We can only hope some new technology will sweep it, crash the whole shit, and leave us with a clean slate. Even then, the cycle is doomed to repeat itself, except exponentially faster than before. Unless we experience the advent of a radically life-changing new technology, or a total societal collapse that sends us back to the stone age.As for the simple question of "why so negative?", it's an easy answer. Because the industry is in such a state that even the new generation looks at it with disdain, and sometimes opts for hipsterism, and sticks to old game. Mainstream gaming is like the pop music of gaming, except we have basically no alternatives for genre. Everyone is losing their taste for it.
