I've never played any Resident Evil game in my life, only saw clips and heard about it from friends playing. I watched his fight with Leon because I was curious and my interpretation was that hunk 100% spared Leon and may have been intentionally seeking to die in the encounter.

The whole thing does fall in on itself as soon as you pick up the acid and it just becomes about getting the Lickers in one spot with an empty bottle and killing them at once with the acid, but they still worked well for a bit before that.
