Why did Spore never make it big?
>>734174675
Ultimately, Spore failed because it was marketed as a scientific evolution game when, in reality, it was little more than creationist propaganda for children. It's why the abiogenesis start of the game, featuring a "molecular" stage, was dropped entirely for the more Bible-friendly panspermia opening cut-scene.
>>734174675It had a good push and was popular enough to have lasting cultural relevance up to the mid 2010s.But the lack of a true follow-up meant that stuff to talk about ran out.

Spore is a dogshit idea for a game and no amount of cope will get around it.Any retard trying to suggest that it was just one Puyo Puyo minigame away from determining if you permanently have diarrhea from being salvagable is a fucking retard.
>>734176993This being said, making little space ships and creatures is fun.If the models weren't watermarked it would be a fun tool to make silly little creatures to put in animations, but unfortunately they're all watermarked to fuck and it'd be a legal nightmare to use any of that shit.
>>734174675The game is kind of fun for a few hours. Not sure why anyone would have gotten that excited about the marketing for it.
>>7341746753 hours to go from cell to space, 40+ hours on space travelall DLC made space travel longer.
>>734177145>all DLC made space travel longer. It glued the creature stage gameplay which was the only actual fun game idea to the space gameplay and they were too lazy to make actual shit to play or even get procgen for missions working so you were fucked.

>>734174675Even if they stuck with only the stages we got and kept its goofy, cartoonish style, if those stages were fleshed out more, I'd think it would have stayed relevant a lot longer. There's some promising stuff buried in space stage if they were just fleshed out more and the stage as a whole had more depth. For me, it was being able to run a huge empire while still having a very high diplomacy rating / not being seen as a threat whilst having allies that I could convince to start wars with other empires without being pulled into it myself and being able to outright buy developed star systems and then paying other factions, pirates, etc to destroy the rest of the faction I bought the star system while I myself look like a saintbasically, I need more space games where I can RP as Israel
>>734174675Spore was outlandish, Molyneux levels of overambitious. They realized during development that they couldn't even come close to making the game they promise and any enthusiasm for the franchise died then and there.
>>734174753fpbp
obligatory
>>734174675the space stage was a mistake + interference from EA made them scale down the scope of the game overall
>>734174675One of the producers fucked the game over and turned it from the original Sim-Everything concept to a funny monster designer where everything looks like it was designed by Luigi Colani.Wish I still remembered the full story, but there was apparently a very big producer level fuckery to make the game different from the developers original visions.
>>734174675Is this game as crazy as I thought? As a kid I never got to play it, but I used to read in magazines how you could make a near infinite amount of aliens and it blew my mind. The concept sounds too damn advanced and cool to be a real thing in a pc game 20 years ago.
Has anyone else only played Spore Hero Arena on the DS?
>>734174675It's 5 games stuck together and none of them that good. Cell is just a flash game you play for 20 minutes, creature is really the fun part but it's still a relatively simple game that couldn't stand on its own, tribe is filler, civilisation is just bad. Bulk of the game is actually space stage, but space is mostly tedious fetch quests and pest control. Terrafoming planets gets boring after the 3rd one setting up the same spice mining colonies again with the same plants and animals because you need to fill large carnivore role and can't be bothered to use up 2 equipment slots for it and it's not like you will ever see it.The game has pretty good editor to make all the assets yourself but the gameplay is kinda meh.

honestly, the spore creature creator was the best part, and they released that for free before the game came out.the actual game couldn't compete with just one part of itself
>>734174675Conned again by the Master Conner. Unlimited possibilities, he said. Evolution is fun, he said...
>>734184020The creature-creator also let you stack stats with more pieces. A creature with lots of mouths actually did more bite damage. Then the actual game releases and somehow a creature literally made out of mouths can barely bite worth a shit, unless it had a tiny hidden level 5 mouth somewhere in it.
>>734176548>Hear about spore from a friend maybe a year before it comes out>The way he talks about it makes it seem like it's going to be the greatest game of all time>He won't shut up about it, he's insanely hyped.>Get pretty excited for it myself, end up picking it up a day or two after it comes out>Have fun, game isn't the best but I enjoy it>See friend a few days later, ask how he's liking it>"It's.. ok I guess.." I still remember the palpable disappointment in his voice. That same friend started gaming less and less in subsequent years. I think Spore broke him.
>>734184208Spore was the Trespasser of the 2000's (literally 10 years after Trespasser). It's understandable why people got so upset.
The creator was great, everything outside it was shallow and retarded. EA would later pull the same move with sims 4 ten years later
>>734174675It’s been a long ass time since I played it but I remember each of the phases taking barely any time to blow through and feeling incredibly shallow. Like others have said, it was closer to a flash game than any kind of in-depth simulator.
>Game was supposed to have neato inverse kinematics so your actual physical shape of your creature would affect how it fights>Stuff like tails, extra limbs, etc would actually make for a more combat-oriented creature>Game releases>Literally WoW for kids

Any good mods for Spore?
>>734174675Because it's five mediocre games stapled together.
I remember sitting in the dark of the computer room as a child, illuminated only by glow of my fathers Mac OS X Leopard, putting hours into the Creature Creator demo, sharing everything on Sporepedia. I was so amped for this game, the sound of the opening title sequence would send electricity up my spine. The theremin, the violins, the swirling galaxy brightening the room. When the full game out, I discovered they had replaced the old opening title music with goofy garbled alien gibberish. It sounded awful, and a small part of my excitement to play the game died. Every subsequent experience with it echoed that opening change, and I wound up just going back just playing in the Creature Creator.

>>734186924this honestly sounds even worse
>>734174675Firstly, every part of it was gimped in the name of accessibility. The "cute" faction won and stripped it of simulationist elements in favour of perceived marketability. Secondly, it was strangled by the DRM; limited amount of installs means limited longevity and no second-hand market.Thirdly, almost no follow-up. The Sims gets dozens of expansions and content packs. Spore got like one content pack and an expansion and that was it. Still spent many hours in the creature, spaceship, and building editors though, despite its limitations.

>>734182841This design sounds really stupid now but back in the day the 5 minigames in 1 game markeded for kids was normal.
>>734174675Forgot the guys name but the second hand man convinced Will Wright to change the theme and presentation of the game to be more childlike and less scientific and realistic, including simplifying game play and era stages. Will didn't stick up for his own vision and the managers under him basically ran away with their infantile version of his idea. Not sure if the forum threads and news articles are up anywhere but there used to be old input from people on the team about this internal struggle, Spore and Mirror's Edge are why EA reduced producing new IPs for a while and focused on heavy micro transactions and familiar safe titles.

>>734185607We're too old to be posting on this site. Do zoomers even know about chip the ripper?
>>734174675I think it did. Ask anyone who was either a kid or playing games around that era, and they'll have played Spore or at the very least heard of it.As to why it got criticised and didn't stay relevant for a decade, is because Spore is just four different minigames; absorb-blobs-to-grow minigame - very simplified singleplayer mmo herd minigame - two layers of RTS - and a rather simple but very long space-exploration game. The first stage and the last are the only good ones.
>>734174675>>734190334Also, there is a game that aims to do what Spore promised it would be, but was not. The game has only completed its single cell stage at this point, and is working on multicellular stage. Thrive is the name of the game. It's pretty good

>>734190865Exploring the full evolution trajectory is the main selling point. I could ask you, what would be the point of just ending at the creature stage?
>>734190865I liked making space ships and buildings more than creaturesNone of the actual game parts were deep enough to hold my interest though
>>734181943In theory you can, but if you're playing it normally, it annoys me how in the creature stage you're kind of forced to use certain parts because of stats. You'll end up making samey creatures so you don't get raped. You only get actual freedom to design any alien you want if you make the creatures separately from the story mode.
>>734191065Physical volution essentially stops there in the first place. Adding clothes is not evolution. And the selling point was designing your own creatures.
>>734186920It's panspermia theory. I read a horse show fanfic about this once.
>>734191158Clothing is supposed to convey culture - which is certainly part of evolution - but I'll agree that clothing alone is just idiotically simplified. Creature evolution should also still be possible through civilization and space stages. But at the end of the day it's a hugely flawed game that was also made for kids, so it has to be more gamey than make-sensey
>>734187369Molecular stage is that deep but aquatic stage is near the top? Also why would the grox be the good guys?
>>734191405:'(
>>734174675Thinking back, the problem wasn't the cuteness but that the environments didn't push for change. Real evolution is about an organism adapting to an environment over multiple generations, but Spore didn't have anything to adapt to. Yes, you could make your creature taller or give them flight so they could reach fruit in taller trees, but you could also find food elsewhere. You could give them hands to pick stuff up, but throwing shit wasn't very useful. There was no weather to adapt to. No point. Be a slug! No point. Get level five parts, wings, legs, and eyes and you're good to go.
>>734191752
>>734184775If you ever thought that was going to run on a home computer of the time, you're out of your mind.
I didn't like galactic adventures at all desu. I thought it was just going to let you beam down onto planets to explore them on foot again like in creature stage and add more content to them, but all it did was spawn designated adventure planets where you just go down and do some dumb scripted sequence and leave.Making your own adventures was also way too fucking complex so anything you downloaded online was always complete shit made by an 8 year old.

>>734174675It was too dumbed down compared to the earlier builds shown off. This is a good example of corporate meddling ruining good games but Will Wright never had the balls to admit it. EA wanted it's mechanics simplified, art style made cuter and content like the aquatic stage cut for expansions. No option to grow underwater made this a massive disappointment from the get go.

Can you quit wasting posts with these dumb pictures?Anyway, Spore was NEVER going to work as a "build your wildest creature game" and an evolution sim. They should have either leaned harder on more interesting game elements, like some sort of tech tree in the creature-civilization stages, or it should have been more of you as a passive observer watching simulated creatures interact, like a big ant farm.

The worst part of Spore is when you get to civ stage and the game forces you to make four buildings and two vehicles right away before you can do anything. If you don't already have an idea of what you want to make it's tedious as hell, they should have tried to do something to space that out better.

>>734200276Just add extra limbs and align them close to the body so they blend in. if you do it right you can kind of achieve jiggle physics since limbs without a hand or mouth on it just sway around when the creature moves.
>>734174675Because the only fun parts were in the beginning, literally everyone dropped every run and creature they made when it turned into a shitty game of civilization. People probably have more time in the character creator screen than any actual gameplay part of spore.
As apparent from this thread everyone made funny dick monsters because the rest of the game was boring
>>734202484Turning the game into a shitty RTS for two stages was probably the worst thing. Tribal and Civ could have worked a lot better if you played as a hero unit accomplishing goals with a little army under your command, and it would have actually resembled the gameplay of the rest of the game.

>>734174838They just didn't want to drop you into the game with a Tetris style puzzle game that would have permanent consequences for your creature. The idea was that fucking up the molecular stage would give your creature inherent debuffs for the rest of the game. Which wouldn't have been true of any of the other stages. It would basically force you to get good at an entirely unrelated game just to be able to play the rest of the game without a handicap, which is completely backwards. A new player should get the default experience, and an experienced one should get bonuses for playing well. They also cut back the cell stage for the same reason. It doesn't really have any bearing on the rest of the game, but it teaches you how the creature editor will work, and it teaches you how unlocking new parts will work. You'll either get them by killing other creatures, or by scavenging them in the environment.
Why isn't there any good mods for this game? I always felt like there was huge potential.

>>734210162Space stage was the end game so it was really the only stage that made sense to have a gameplay expansion for. Too bad Galactic Adventures was basically just creature stage gameplay shittily grafted onto it, and creature stage gameplay isn't even fun without being able to evolve your creature.
>>734190056damn you just reminded me we had that prototype releasing exactly at christmas, or new year's eve? i dont rememberwas pretty letdown it wasn't this one, or even the 2007 build
>>734210431I feel like they could make gameplay expansions for creature stage even if the stage doesn't go on forever, add stuff like biomes and all that.
>>734193769>>734193874>>734195136didn't know you could do actually cute and hot creatures in spore(i think there was actual support ingame to straight up export the models into a file that you could use in maya too)>>734192564>>734192748 damn i remember downloading this guy from the sporepedia as a kid
>>734189003Thrive is pretty neat, but the tips the game gives are weirdSome are very sensible, but I also got a very aggressive tip to get a nucleus, but right after getting a nucleus the cell couldn't get nearly enough ATP anymore. It's not that it didn't warn about making sure to get some ATP, but that was not nearly made as abundantly clear as getting that nucleus was made.
>>734191145>you're kind of forced to use certain parts because of statsUsually I'd get the parts I want, and also the parts that were actually good but hide those inside the limbs and such
>>734210162Well, GA was technically gameplay related but not in sense I was talking about. It didn't really expand gameplay, just added missions based on earlier stages to last stage and level editor. None of stages was really expanded much
>>734174675The Robin Williams demo of it was infinitely better than what the game actually was.
I remember when they added cyborg parts exclusive to a Dr. Pepper promo and it was the only way to make something similar looking to the Grox without modsGlad the DLC locked behind goyslop gimmick didn’t really stick
>>734182270Zoom zooms too young to live through this hilarity.
>>734212370You can export the models to blender pretty easily apparently
>>734191145>>734212530The worst is when you connect online and half the shit that gets downloaded in your game is just a cube covered in every level 5 part in the game.If all you're doing is fighting maxis creatures you don't really have to use all level 5 parts since the maxis creatures are generally pretty balanced and usually designed for aesthetics, but there's nothing to balance anything the 8 year olds are making.
>>734212734That Dr. Pepper promotion must have been the most regional and limited run promotion ever because I've literally never seen anyone with an account that actually has those parts.
It was unironically too early. The technology didn't exist to make Will Wright's vision accurately without it being way too expensive or taking way too long to develop. That being said, if the game did come out now or EA made a sequel it would probably be garbage for other reasons.
>>734178152OK so I don't know how to explain this but I was a "Darkspore Kid". when all the other kids were playing real videogames, I was obsessed with Darkspore.
>>734178152enjoyed the beta, never played the game and now it's dead lol
>>734190193Your baby daddy's worst nightmare?
>>734212370>>734214086>You can export the models to blender pretty easily apparentlyCan confirm. I'm 99.99% sure they aren't exported rigged with skeletons and stuff, just the model. Here's some renders I made of my critters from 2013.
>CTRL+F YouTube>this wasn't postedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnAThis video and knowing what the final product is are all you need to understand why Spore failed.
>>734217680That video had me so hyped.
>>734174675>Big kid>Poor so live in a trailer with no computer or internet access>Finally get a computer with a bunch of cigarette pack upc codes rewards catalog>Go to store to get a game>Use the little birthday money I have>Buy spore creature creator>Pop it in>You must connect to the internet to play this>Walmart will not accept an opened game as a return:(
>>734218023>You must connect to the internet to play thisAnd it's only gotten worse since then.
>>734212381The game literally tells you that it is very expensive and you can back out with the undo button (which the tutorials then mention a second time) and that you should focus on ATP production. Doing a second run because I tried thermal and photosynthesis but the game never gave me the upgraded ones and what it didn't tell me about was that temperature goes down. Adapt in the depths and then slowly advanced once you can chow down on everything else. New game plan.
>>734178152I remember almost buying this and putting it back when I saw the online requirement thinking that it would be gay if my game stopped working when the severs died
>>734181771They fucked over Will Wright so badly he left games industry entirely
>>734174675It was dumbed down from the original vision. I knew so many people who were insanely crushed.
https://youtu.be/wiMyCzezfTg
>>734178152>>734207214But there is also timeline where Darkspore was first and eventually it become standard to have game what you can play once (pay again if you want to play more)
>>734217680Yeah, that video was breathtaking. The scale of the game was insane.Hell, I don't think there's been any game since that has the same level of procedurally created content. Like the animations that all work based on how your creature looks.
>>734174675The biggest draw, the creature stage, was hobbled hard. And I don't just mean by dropping bit by bit stages. The most hyped part was just a prologue for poorly done RTS bullshit. Crawling out of the muck and hitting tribal stage should have been most of the game and leaving your singular creature was a mistake in my eyes. I wonder if something like this could be made in this day and age. 'Procedural generation' was a new fangled thing thats been reduced to a buzzword and computational power is comparatively plentiful.
>>734175085no man's sky was 100x worse
>>734222323>'Procedural generation' was a new fangled thing thats been reduced to a buzzword and computational power is comparatively plentiful. The reason they used procedural generation wasn't due to computational power, it's because there was so much freely editable stuff that there would be no possible way to manually animate every imaginable combination of parts or to texture everything. It all had to be generated on the fly.
>>734174753Didn't stop plenty of other games to make it big
>>734215108If this thread isn’t dead in a few hours I might reinstall and check to see if my account does.I very distinctly remember the promo because EA did the same shit where you could get exclusive armor for Mass Effect 2. I think I redeemed the Spore shit and forgot about it. Not sure if I even have my old log in info either.
One thing that drives me nuts in the creature creator is how mouth parts are always treated as a creature's entire head by the animation system. You really can't do anything creative with mouth placement at all unless you want the entire thing to start contorting the second it starts moving because it assumes whatever the mouth is attached to is a neck.
>>734224846>>734215108it's easily available on the net anyways. you can even publish creatures with the parts on the sporepedia since a few years ago
>>734225081Creature creator needs update. Like if they continued to work of Spore, this would one of thing they should eventually change
>>734225260Is there really no game that hits the same spot as Spore?
