I had fun with the game on its original release but years later when it got re released on psn as a ps plus free game i replayed it and the soundtrack was suddenly completely different and worse. And i just realized the music was carrying the entire game and its just not very good on its own.

NTA. Edmund let it go because he knew it was meant to be a one-off project, and nothing more.
>>
>>734193129
Who cares? SMB is over rated anyway.
>>
>>734194843
The original artist had a tism fit and forbid them to keep using the original soundtrack for future releases.
>>
>>734196571
>Edmund let it go
False, Edmund wanted to retain the IP as its deeply personal to him (meatboy was based on himself, bandage girl is based on his wife), but after a legal battle Tommy was able to keep the rights under his own company. Edmund is still clearly bitter about it if you look at videos & interviews he's done, but always speaks carefully to avoid legal problems as Tommy is quite litigious over it.
>>
>>734196571
Machinarium is still amazing. Not everything needs to have more games, a webcomic and a GaaS sequel.
>>
>>734196775

Fair enough. With that said, did Edmund have plans to keep making new SMB games?
>>
>>734197461

Oh it almost certainly is, especially with those lyrics lmfao
>>
>>734193129
The original game is a freaking masterpiece, OST is perfect and gameplay is on point.

After Edmund left, they basically had no idea what to do with it and turned it into a runner, basically killing the brand.

Meanwhile he did a spiritual sequel in "the end is night" which is very meh, but blew up with Binding and now Mewgenics.
>>
>>734197467
>did Edmund have plans to keep making new SMB games?
Before Edmund left Team Meat, he was working with Tommy on Meat Boy Forever, although Edmund was more passionate about Mewgenics and Camdrone at the time. Tommy cancelled Mewgenics without even informing Edmund of its cancellation, which is likely the catalyst that lead to Edmund leaving the company and the legal battle over Meat Boy began. Team Meat technically owned the rights to Mewgenics too, but Edmund bought it off them as he saw potential in the project that Tommy didn't. Edmund has said before that he'd love to revisit the Meat Boy IP, but that he's generally against direct sequels; he considers all of his games to be connected in some way and is frustrated that he is unable to use the Meat Boy IP or any of its characters anymore, and you can really feel that in Mewgenics. The End is Nigh is about as close as you can get to a Meat Boy sequel.
>>
>>734197467
The End is Nigh is a game that Ed has been very transparent about it being a spiteful lamenting about how he will never be able to make a Meat Boy game ever again, as it was in active development when the Team Meat split was happening.
>>
>wtf why are there no active discussions about a 15 year old single player game
why is /v/ like this
>>
>>734197848
>he is unaware
the fact you don't even know it has 2 sequels perfectly demonstrates how badly the IP has been handled.
>>
I fully understand Tommy's mindset of wanting to not take risks and to just rest on the laurels of a successful brand, but he's learned the hard way that a singular commercial success does not make a strong brand that can be milked. It needs passion to continue driving it both on the developer's side and the player's, and Edmund was that driving creative force, especially after the online portal for SMB became unusable and leaderboards became useless. All that was left was people doing their own personal playthroughs and a handful of people doing any% speedruns that abused massive glitches.

Kind of your own fault for not paying attention to anything Ed has said over the past 10 years or so.
He avoids talking in depth about certain subjects due to fear of litigation from Tommy (an NDA was absolutely signed as part of his departure and the IP of Mewgenics being transferred to him), but when talking about his own work independent of Team Meat he makes it very clear how personal SMB was.

You can hear the frustration in Edmund's voice and choice of words. There's also been many instances (on twitter mainly) where people have asked him lore details about meat boy and he's unable to answer them for fear of legal trouble. He's gone on record a few times saying that TEiN's development period was a low point for him, and feeling the loss of the meat boy IP lead to him feeling like his own world was ending, hence the namesake for TEiN and its obvious meat boy parrallels.
I also don't like your snarky faggot attitude.

>>
>>734201069
>>734200489
Why else is throbbing king in the game?
No, seriously, I cannot think of any other reason to include this brand new character that has otherwise no relation with mewgenics, cats, or the world the game takes place in. On top of the fact the throbbing king appears in a meat-themed area of the game (which the game makes several nods to it being the "not-meatboy area" *wink wink*, via some dialog). It's absolutely in Edmund's petty sense of humor to put in the throbbing king as a way to indirectly slander Tommy in a way that would not be legally identifiable as Tommy.
>>
>>734204585
Edmund should put a drawing of a cat shitting on a picture of Tommy in the game's files.

Braid benefitted from being on Xbox Live when people were desperate for anything on it. If Jonathan Blow kept releasing games at that pace, he could have maintained relevance. Fez benefitted because Indie Game the Movie worked as effective advertising.

I played a bunch of rebirth on god knows what system that isn't steam (vita I think?) when it released and just like SMB, I quickly realized that the game isn't really that fun without the original soundtrack on the background. I have it on steam because of random bundle #234 and haven't even bothered playing it there. And if I ever do I'll quickly mod the soundtrack in.
On that matter, Danny composed for crypt of the necrodancer that I recommend to anyone that enjoyed his stuff (but I got immensely omega turbo filtered with the extra characters)

Is it wrong that I'm kind of nostalgic for the time when indie devs were artistic types at least pretending that their games had something meaningful to say? compared to modern day's glut of 1:1 vampire survivor/balatro clones that are focused purely on farming dopamine and stealing concepts from actual slot machines in an attempt to be as addictive as possible.
Obviously the former kind of game is still getting made, but they rarely get the same kind of spotlight as the latter.

NTA but I dislike it because it all stems from the "Games are Art", I can laugh at that pretentious devs now, but I understand that they felt insecure that their hobby wasn't being taken seriously, and they wanted to show how meaningful it was. But they did it in the most cliche way. When you're art is made with the point of it have meaning, that's when it becomes pretentious. Art is everything and nothing, but honest art is sincere. It's made without an agenda or narrative to push.

Nowadays people don't argue about whether games are or aren't art anymore, because it doesn't matter. It's not that people don't take videogames seriously anymore... they take it way too seriously now. The agenda changed from "Art for Art's sake" to politics and DEI. People care more about the meta-narrative of "Whose this game for?" rather than "Is the game fun?"

I think part of Edmund's success is that he's not a pretentious artist. His games have a meaning to him, but he's not making them to explain that, he's making them to be fun. A fun game means more to people than the most beautiful, artistic walking simulator.

Does anyone else have the following problem with indie games? The characters look fucking lame as shit. I don't care how revolutionary your game is if the characters look dumb or lame I'm not interested in buying. I need for the characters to look competently designed like Cuphead or Freedom Planet at the minimum. I just can't get into indie gaming because they design some of the worst characters I've ever seen.

It's amazing how ugly indie characters are. Maybe sometimes ugly characters like in Undertale and Deltarune hit it big but those are flukes and these are also terrible games.

the whole notion is retarded. "durr it killed the genre". No, it's shithead devs with 0 talent making bland clones is what kills the genres and that still doesnt kill the genre, it just means you should play the GOOD GAMES

I think it's important to point out that DannyB was pissed off that Edmund used Ridiculon for Mewgenics, and refused to work with Edmund ever again. Meanwhile, Mewgenics has the most talked OST I've ever seen, not counting just individual hits, but entire soundtracks.

>It feels like an IWBTG fangame and I mean this as praise.
IWBTG is shit though
>>
>>734215156
That just means DannyB is likely free for me to pitch my game at when it's in more of a state to need real music vs. my placeholder shit.

The subhumanity of this thing is intense.
If it's a zippertits, why does it have long hair and nails?

>imagine being such a bitch as raped as tommy, embarrassing
I don't know a single person who has worked with that many people and has burned as many bridges as Edmund has. He is completely incapable of seeing people as partners, which is why his wife is a retard that barely graduated high school and has no career or skills of her own. The only reason he's been working with Tyler for this long is because he's treated him as an employee since day one.

>honest art is sincere. It's made without an agenda or narrative to push.
You contradicted yourself in 15 words, amazing.
>>
>>734215370
some trannies give up on trying to "pass", it's completely retarded that she went as far as chopping her tits but doesn't want to try to look masculine, but she's obviously mentally ill so we can't expect her to make sense

always thought this game was fucking ugly and incredibly pretentious

It can't be helped, autists with grand visions have trouble with people relations

As far as I know Ed has only burned bridges with Danny and Tommy, he's in good terms with every other developer or coder he worked with.

>and incredibly pretentious
how in the world is it pretentious? Do you even know what that word means

Do you not remember all the pretentious signs everywhere in the game?

>he's in good terms with every other developer or coder he worked with
Hahahahaha Zoomers don't know the old Edmund lore
>>
>>734215898
to be fair, Edmund is extremely autistic
>>
>>734220381
Name the rest then.
>>
>>734220093
Nah, he also burned bridges with that IGF clique he was in with Phil Fish.
>>
>>734220492
>spoonfeed me daddy
No
>>
>>734215898
Isn't Edmund himself a highschool dropout?
>>
>>734220758
Did he work with them though? I mean everyone already hates Phil Fish and I don't think they ever worked on anything together, they were just in the same documentary.
>>734220815
So you can't name them, got it.
>>
>>734221126
>So you can't name them
Because it was over 15 years ago, retard. Why do you think he has a new programmer on every single project?
>>
>>734212949
the guy is working on a new game right now

2015 happened
>>
>>734221695
He started working with Tyler way earlier than he started working with Tommy, Florian also did a bunch of programming for him in the past and they're still on good terms.
The other one-ofs like the flash Meat Boy programmer were very secretive, but from what we know and what Ed says, those were really just meant to be one-of things anyway.
>>
Genuinely though Ed was less salty now when I saw this, but I guess not really?

>>734220758
...why wouldn't he want to burn bridges with those guys? they're exactly the pretentious indie devs we were talking about earlier.
>>
Best damn track in the game

I liked the demo but those fancy graphics just make there be too much visual noise. I lost track of my character a few times because of it
