How good are you with the whole "it's not a bad game, just a bad *insertfranchisehere* game" statement? Have you enjoyed any entries that were disliked by fans because they strayed too far from its franchise?
>>734209113E3 blitz!
>>734209113I've never heard a reasonable use of that. If the new one constantly relies on the old one for basic mechanics, then it's a bad sequel.
>>734209113This meme had me sucking Nintendo dick deep into the Wii U era
This is said for Assassin's Creed 4 a lot, but the fans saying it aren't saying the games are bad.
20% of the time, "it's not as good as its predecessor, but it is still better than most other games of this genre."80% of the time, "it's a better game than its predecessors, but the things it improved upon and overhauled aren't what I'm used to so I will vaguely dislike it."
>>734209620RE4 is a good example of the later
>>734209113I still stand by my assessment that Chrono Cross is a good game but a terrible sequel.
>>734209113Wii Music was so fucking good, and I'd argue one of the best games in the Wii series. Fun toy and sovlfvl presentation. More inviting and more fun to fuck around with than bland, sterile corporate slop like Clubhouse Games, Switch Sports, DragxDrive and the digital user manual "game" for the Switch 2. Clubhouse Games you could say at least has fine board games but the presentation is so bleak and anti-fun you just don't want to play it.
>>734209113DmC Devil May Cry, I will defend it to the death as a big fan of DMC 1, 3, and 5.
>>734209113Every single instance of it has been completely reasonable this such a fucking stupid argument
>>734209113franchises have established themes and mechanics that are expectations for other shit sharing the same name. a game can be well made while not fulfilling those expectations
>>734209113I didn't hate Starfield, and I say this as the stereotypical millennial who thinks everything after Morrowind has been a gradual downhill trend.Disappointing by RPG standards and especially by the standards of Bethesda's earlier offerings; but by "procgen exploration/looter shooter" standards it kept me entertained for a few dozen hours. It's a 7/10 game that people call a 4/10 game, because it's made by people who usually put out 8s 9s and 10s.
Breath of Fire V. Frankly, over time, I found it more memorable than previous games.
>>734209113>How good are you with the whole "it's not a bad game, just a bad *insertfranchisehere* game" statement?100% fair argument, a franchise sets precedents and expectations from long term fans who like specific aspects of a series, if those aspects are removed from the game, even if the game is good fans are completely on the right to be upset.>Have you enjoyed any entries that were disliked by fans because they strayed too far from its franchise?Sure SOTN is a dogshit classicvania and changed the series direction going forward but i really love it.
>>734209113If they had confidence in their game, then it wouldn't be part of a franchise, it would just be its own thing.Even thinly veiled derivatives are usually superior to franchise shit when they are produced by major publishers who feel compelled to slap established names onto things. For game franchises, fan mods and conversions are the only worthy successors
>>734213508That's a perfect counterexample, where so much of it is taken directly from other DMC games, and it only would've benefitted from taking more.
>>734209113Ninja Gaiden 4It’s not the worst shit ever, and an average at best action game, but utterly sucks massive dicks and is so shit as a Ninja Gaiden game it’s very existence is disrespectful to the series.
>>734209113It's cope from secondary "fans" who defend shit games.
