>Don't fall for meme distros
>Recommends the least scrub friendly distro.
I have to agree with this anon that most distros are a meme in the sense that you won't stick with them on the long run.

I'll spare you the distro hopping. All distros are made from these three.
>Debian
Never breaks. Predictable. Old reliable. Actually old.
>Fedora
Rolling release with corporate backing. Things will break, they might be fixed, and you get to play with shiny new things.
>Arch
You build everything from scratch. You actually need to understand how computers work beyond control panel or rebooting to install and use this.

If I had to recommend an absolutely scrub-friendly distro, it would be CachyOS or Debian.
>inb4 but Cachy's just Arch-
yeah, but Cachy does most of the heavy lifting. It's in my experience, the only distro that truly 'just werks'.
This doesn't mean that everything is just handed to you. I wanted to install the H-content patch for Winter memories and I had to tweak a few things using wine, but you can find everything online.
>>
>>734238791
ubutntu, mint, centos, fedora, it really doesn't matter. if you don't like one aspect of it you can just install whatever packages you're missing from another distro.

Who is your fucking target consumer, Microsoft? The people who use PC's are gamers, developers, and workers. Your average normie uses a phone for internet. PC's are back to be using used by nerds and workers like it was pre-2000. You are not getting back the normie casuals. It isn't happening. They only used PC's in the past because it was the gate to using the internet. You need to focus on preventing any further bleeding of users to Linux.

This is my issue with Microsoft. They have a product that the world depends on, yet I feel they are going to run us into a wall chasing something they can't get. I'm not ready to make the jump to Linux, so I'm not even going to get into that. I do wish them the best, however, for when the day comes I inevitably do.

Anon, I have a work development environment consisting of applications going back 30 years. It's headache enough getting things running how they should when jumping to the newest Windows iteration. The jump to Linux for me isn't going to be a simple plug-n-play. There's a hell of a lot of things that will break, and emulation isn't going to come without a hit to performance.

I know it must be great for other people who don't do a lot with there PCs, or just game, but that's not the case for everyone. I don't need to jump to Linux. I need Microsoft to stop fucking around a once good operating system.

Operating System elitism is for midwit retards and people with autism
Microsoft themselves use Ubuntu for their Azure cloud. They have absolutely no problems using Linux whenever it's appropriate, and they certainly aren't afraid to tell people they utilize Linux. Reminder that Microsofts first commercial OS was Xenix, which was a UNIX based system, and DOS was just their attempts at fixing some of IBMs bugs and repackaging PC-DOS into its own thing. It wasn't until Dave Cutler joined Microsoft in the late 80s and early 90s that we see the UNIX vs Windows autism, because Dave was famous for hating the UNIX paradigm, and sought to make Windows NT as non-UNIX like as possible by making everything a property and started implementing shit from VMS, another OS he worked on.

Anyways, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that Microsoft themselves literally do not give a fuck what OS you use, they already have their exit strategy when Windows finally dies, and that's pretty much to move their entire workflow to Linux, because the only people who think you can only chose one or the other are terminally online retards, whereas people in the real world just choose what works. Microsoft doesn't see Linux as a rival or threat. In any case, I've personally been using Ubuntu on and off for decades but finally decided to switch fulltime earlier this year and I'm probably never going back to Windows. Linux in the past was extremely hit-or-miss but nowadays it's pretty much a commercial OS being developed by fulltime employees with some volunteers on the side. All my drivers are here, all my games work, even some more obscure programs work just fine now too.

You last bastion is the same man who called it over 10 years ago. The biggest problem linux has is the lack of a unified effort to actually make it functional for the average computer user. It consists of a base of users who:
a. Believe the average consumer shouldn't have a computer in the first place
b.Are fucking troons more concerned over what naming conventions the code itself should use
c. multiple other users with their own vision and versions of linux which divides the userbase into hyper specific uses unfit for consumers

Richard Stallman stalled too fucking long and Linus Torvalds gave the fuck up, they're done they aren't coming to save you. Gabe is the only person who is going to come close to unifying these retards because he's the only one with actual capital to invest in such ventures, plus a userbase who day by day have more reasons to make the switch from microsoft. A combination of the death of windows and the death of other linux distros will be needed and will happen over the course of the next 10 years, either by the developers dying out via their open wounds or the increasing normie hatred of the new Adobe product subscription plans.

GNU/Linux is a fully modular OS since it's designed to have a small kernel space and a large userland, which makes it easy to swap every single aspect of the OS for something else, from individual kernel modules, to the init, to the desktop environment and so on, as opposed to Windows, which is has a comparatively larger kernel space and a significantly more monolithic userland.

a lot of ai bloat, reason for changing versions is because a lot of computers that can run windows 11 won't be able to run local models they have planned

ID check to turn your computer on for the first time to comply with new digital ID laws for OS providers coming out

total eradication of local accounts, no power user workarounds.

You need to understand that the average person has no fucking clue about anything about computers. Even posters here who know enough about computers to understand that windows has gone to shit, but still say they are too retarded for Linux are easily in the top 1% of people who understand computers. You and I know that LLMs are at best a slightly more advanced predictive text algorithm that can only spit out what it is told to, but to the average person it may as well be magic, like they are really speaking to a sapient entity.
And the average person as it turns out, is what is causing this growth. They are in your government, they are buying stocks, they are driving up the price of computer components.

That was for a different reason. MS was going all-in on Apple envy at that time, and was saying that UWP/WinStore-only apps would become the new standard. Win32 was legacy and would be dropped. Needless to say this would destroy Steam if it happened. I doubt Valve would act without that existential threat at the time.
The linux thing made it impossible for MS to do that. Dropping win32 would leave linux as the only OS compatible with 99% of games, a colossal self-suicide that even MS wouldn't do. But in retrospect, MS was too jeeted to pull that off anyway. Even now ms store apps constantly break and they've mostly given up on pushing them.

Retard proof. Software Manager basically has every software you'd ever want to install. You don't even need to use the terminal and if you do, you can just Google it and copy/paste it. There are some quirks like no middle click scrolling though.
I play too many multiplayer games with anticheat to actually use it on the desktop unfortunately. But it saved my shitty laptop's longevity, which eventually started running at 100% CPU idle with W11 as every update got more bloated. Mint XFCE runs on actual toasters. Browsers can still be resource intensive, but there's a lot more room for it when Windows isn't hogging up the performance.

I think the funny thing is with how hard they are pushing AI with coding + development, why wouldn't everyone (eventually) just vibe code their own OS and not use their product at all?
that goes for all companies, AI could completely kill Saas and then all that would be left is hardware companies (which makes sense, microslop is one.)

so why even do the song and dance? why release a w12 anyway? unless they know that AI will never be good enough to kill Saas and they're hedging their bets.

Linus Torvalds himself uses Ubuntu, because he doesn't have time to fix shit, it used to be the goat but that was ages ago the Amazon advertisement shit happened. Debian is the other old reliable and sort of a protest choice against that misdeed for those who haven't forgotten about it.
Once you've learned your handful of commands, you're set for life because many of the systems have worked exactly like they did decades ago. Windows keeps changing their shit and UI, but you don't have to deal with that. Everything can practically function with the same amount of hassle it can in Windows, except the stuff that is made not to work.

Thats because linux often uses middle scroll to switch between windows or some shit. You can turn it back on by going into the config section. As an example about:config for firefox browsers, and then just search for middlemouse and turn scroll to true.

I can only imagine what people really mean when they say this is that you can add icons to your desktop by default on Mint. Gnome can be pretty barebones by default, and distros like Ubuntu tend to mostly stick to stock Gnome, but you don't even need to really get your hands dirty to configure gnome to your liking, at least not anymore than you'd need to get your hands dirty on Windows for some of its more esoteric settings.

The only reason Linux isn't more popular than Windows on desktop is because its greatest strength is its greatest downfall, and that's too many choices. Every time the subject of "What is the definitive Linux OS?" comes up you get a million different answers from people on varying degrees of the spectrum
>Get Mint it's the most user friendly and Windows-like
>Get Ubuntu it's the most popular
>Get Arch because I have brain damage and think I'm way smarter than I actually am
>Get Fedora it's what Linus and the US government uses
>Get none of those because they all are pushing for this OS/Kernel to have consistent standards which is bad because I'm retarded, use my esoteric distro instead, it doesn't use flatpaks or systemd or gnome or anything that is trying to make GNU/Linux a cohesive experience for the average person
This makes it practically impossible to recommend Linux to anyone. People want a "definitive experience™"
In my opinion, Fedora, Mint, Debian, and Ubuntu are all basically the same OS with some minor differences in terms of user experience under the hood. If you're coming from MacOS, you might feel more comfortable with Ubuntus default UI, if you're coming from Windows, you might feel more comfortable with Mint's UI. Linux devs want GNU/Linux to have a consistent experience for end users about as much as you do, so you really can't go wrong on the big, popular distros. It's just not easy to tell the average person this.
>>
>>734246326
I constantly hear about needing to input commands and that there are things lacking in every distro. How the fuck you expect an average Joe to start using it they end up getting confused on what to pick and then having to fight the OS?

>>
>>734240821
Plenty of games do not run on Linux, and no, I'm not talking about live service slop.
>>
>>734237984
Mint is the easiest, its a general purpose OS and I've been perfectly fine gaming on it using an Nvidia 3080, literally just use steam proton and set it to "experimental" and then change that if you're having issues.
Mint focuses on stability. it has a great GUI for installing popular software like browsers and basic programs, with a wide range of stuff one click to install available across the web because its ubuntu based.

No matter what distro anyone chooses you have to learn some linux-isms, google a few problems if you have them etc. I think users that would already use the command line to run programs in windows will end up using terminal sometimes regardless.
P.S If you're having issues with Mint, maybe try CachyOS since I have that on a weak laptop and it works absolutely great too.

Linux is technically just a kernel. A kernel doesn't really do anything on its own, so as a result, people make different operating systems to run on top of the kernel. Technically all modern Linux Distros use the same exact OS, which is the GNU OS, Fedora is just GNU, Ubuntu is GNU, Mint is GNU, Arch is GNU etc, and the only differences between them are really just what specific software and UIs are setup by default
>Why not just get pure GNU/Linux?
Because the GNU OS itself doesn't really do much on its own either, it's designed to be a bare minimum set of software for other people to make distros out of more or less.
>>
>>734246406
I think one of the worst parts of getting Linux is figuring out which one to go with. There's a fuckload of different distros, and someone who's past experience is with Windows or their phone or whatever doesn't know how to select one. I tell everyone to just get Ubuntu. It saves most people the headache, and anyone who gets pissed off about it is free to get something else.

Remember microsoft have been talking about a subscription/DLC based Windows version for a while now.
If you dont pay the sub you literally cant use non-Microsoft .exes on the machine.
Then there'll be tiers of subscriptions like they already have for Office365.

>AI focused OS
Microsoft is a buggy hellscape of Pajeets and AI now. Anyone with enough tech knowledge to install Linux should have abandoned it long ago on their personal computers.

But unfortunately Microsoft is like the definition of "too big to fail". It's not like Bud Light where customers can decide "I'm gonna drink some other beer because fuck trannies" or people deciding to go from Coke to Pepsi.

For many companies trying to escape the Microsoft hellscape would cost a ton of money hiring out a whole group of people to change everything from databases to your employees laptops since everything is working on Microsoft. So even if you tried, even basic tasks like trying to pay your employees on time wouldn't just be a giant pain in the ass, it would literally be illegal as fuck.

The game was rigged from the start.

You have to bear in mind anon that to most normies, even basic car maintenance is a complex and difficult task. To them everything they can't see inside the cab is just a black box of mechanical mystery. Shit, most people barely even understand how their own bodies work. All they are focused on in life is : have job, get money, have fun, don't die. Most view knowledge as a chore to acquire or upkeep, and even those who do get some knowledge will optimize it for the minimum burden and maximizing fun. Computers then are like literal fucking wizardry and why learn it yourself when you can pay nerds to build and fix it. Only around 25% of all humans in the world possess a personal computer, and of that population only 5-8% of them actually understand how they work to any measure beyond on/off and basic use. Understanding them well enough to use Linux, puts you in the 1% of personal computer users.

This is also why the Steam Machine from Valve is such a critical piece of consumer hardware : it offers consumers who don't know better a way out from Microsoft and Apple's police-state invasion of privacy. It is no coincidence that right as it was announced, suddenly Ai needs *all* the RAM and *all* the harddrives, Discord announces it needs ID and biometrics, and now governments and states are enacting laws for Operating Systems themselves to require the same things Discord is after.

The walls are closing-in, anons.

Every distribution recommended by anyone who isn't joking will come with a web browser, and game compatibility is effectively the same across distributions (inb4 "n-nuh uh" from people who think their epic rolling-release distro's bleeding-edge packages are the reason they can run games that are ignoring those packages and using stable Ubuntu shit anyway because their games are running in a Steam Linux Runtime container). So I guess you should just pick a distro that doesn't come with lots of other stuff pre-installed. But if you find a distro that only has a web browser and a graphics driver, you'll probably realize that you take for granted many other things and will be mad about not having them.
>>
>>734247727
I'm already that anyway. If anyone has a problem with Windows, then I have to come to the rescue. Linux would have solved the problem of my family friend (basically aunt)'s grandchildren buying her a 64 GB HP "Streambook" which went obsolete in one year because Windows needs more than 64 GB of space. But it just didn't cross my mind at the time.
Now I'm actually typing this out on my own 64 GB laptop I got for free, impossible with Windows.
Windows is just for gaming and maybe some other professional software. No normie needs it. Again, just give them a button to get on Facebook. Normies have already looked at me like some hacker when I was 12 years old going through the file explorer on Windows XP. They don't need to know shit about a terminal when they can't even change a wallpaper on Windows anyway.

Incorrect. It is due to computer science being recognized as the future of information warfare and control of the masses by right-leaning republican and libertarian men, whom 10-15 years ago were in college, and are now in positions of power at places like OpenAI, Grok, X, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Palantir, NSA, you name it. >>

The consolidation occurred due to copyright and was pushed by the government.
The outcome of search engines becoming useless was ultimately desired by the government, since it restricts access to novel information or potentially dissenting viewpoints.
If people rely entirely on a handful of AI chatbots to "sift" through slop and condense that into actionable information, then the government or more powerful interest groups(capable of leaning on the corporations providing these services) have full control over available information dissemination.
The internet went from a publishing platform where one man could independently make his opinions and knowledge known to the world, back to the same 19th and early 20th century publishing hellscape of government control and censorship.

This is a large scale test of sorts.
Microsoft is doing this to assert dominance against the masses and reduce over population.
Because if people blindly accept this, then they can do whatever they want.

Find private info from your computer.
Control information.
Censor and block the software that you use.
Even installing viruses without you knowing at all.

Gradually, you'll be paying more for less features.
And those who cannot afford these features will soon lose their jobs in this rapid chaotic growth.

This also why they are chasing AI and cutting down the production of RAM or hard drives.
They will have more and you'll have nothing.

Also...
Reminder that Bill Gates is a piece of shit who doesn't care about creating viruses to depopulate Earth. So I'm sure he's scheming something bigger than just wanting a new release of Windows to get more money.

exactly. why is it white men are being replaced by foreign entities when AI does the work itself? why aren't we beind paid and yet they are. cheapskates. society is going to be in for a rude awakening coming several decades when the housing, job, and population crisis will be at an all time high. it feels like they're trying to cull the white race and make the world brown. oh and lets not forget climate change, the bullshit scam.

The entire MintOS shat the bed 3 times in one day when I tried using Linux. I never had those types of problems in many years of using Windows. For all the seething it causes, W10 just works on my machine. I've never had a bigger issue than a single program shitting the bed and having to relaunch it and it works again. Just debloat it, there are many tools for it and it's infinitely easier than installing shit on Linux (where installing Steam bricks your entire OS, great design).

When you act like not having brakes or a security belt in your car is good akshually because it forces you to be a "better driver", any sane person will tell you you're retarded. Linux refuses to have the most basic security features so your entire OS doesn't kill itself the second you try to change the screen's brightness.

I'm probably not the guy to ask, since I haven't distro hopped a lot. However, I have been using Pop!_OS for a number of years, so I can comment on that, if it's one of the options you're considering. I'd say it's a better version of Ubuntu. You get less software bloat, you get sleekier UI, it comes with NVIDIA drivers preinstalled, and it uses flatpak instead of snap (a system-independent package management system I prefer). However, they changed the default desktop environment from GNOME to their own COSMIC desktop. While I like the stock experience of the latter more, it just doesn't have the extension ecosystem that GNOME has. It also shockingly lacks some basic features like having a night light. While it's promising and I do like may things about it, I'd say it's too undercooked for the time being. I also worry about the future development of the extension ecosystem, because this desktop environment is niche and to my knowledge only used by this one distro, which severely limits the userbase, which in turn severely limits how many people will be working on it. However, I think when you download the iso of the system, you can choose GNOME instead, but I'm not sure.

Literally the only thing that can make Linux compete with Windows at this point is mass migration to Linux and the resulting tidal wave of complaints that would result from such a migration.
Every single instance of trying to get a Windows software running correctly on Linux is doing ghetto fixes and constant tweaks to get it to even work properly.

Linux users will try to convince you that this is a quirk and that you're retarded for not wanting to multiply the amount of time it takes for you to accomplish any task instead of admitting that having to add layers of extra work just to be able to do things Windows can do is bullshit.
It's not fun, it's not cool, it's fucking annoying, and it's a flaw of Linux and it always has been and it always will be until you have hundreds of thousands of new people flooding websites with "Why is this shit fucking stupid out of the box? Well, Linux is not Windows, so I don't really know what you expect considering you're running non-native software compiled for a different operating system. Windows requires way more work to run Linux programs than vice-versa. But again, Wine works out of the box

IIRC not even that will fuck your shit up since you can just go into Grub and boot the last known bootable state and just run the update again. I remember how esoteric Linux was back in the 2000s, which I suspect is a lot of Windows users ITTs impression of it but it really isn't like that anymore

they're embedded in basically the entire world's structural IT sector.
there's a reason parts of the government still use window's from the mid 2000's and it's because reworking them into modern age technology would take to long and cost to much and would fuck up entire sectors of the worlds logistical management.
MS can afford to make these mistakes since it has already become a vital branch of world governments (like NVIDIA is so desperately trying to become as well with it's lean into military applications of its technology).
>>
>>734254023
it's not improving that quickly. there was an immediate jump with the LLM craze but it has slowed down significiantly
my favorite example is for video gen. people still compare back to the will smith eating spaghetti from 2023 to show how far video gen has come. what they conveniently leave out is that you had working videos of smith eating spaghetti in early 2024. you don't see them comparing videos from 2024 to 2025 to 2026 because you will see the amount of improvement isn't that impressive.

there has been a lot of growth in the short term but is slowing down a lot now. all these "tiny problems" that need to be ironed out for AI to become a usable and useful product are in fact not tiny and will require hundreds of times more work than it took to get AI to it's current position. but that's not very marketable so they pretend that these things can just be polished off in a few years

The Greeks invented 10+ different forms of love. The ideals of the Greco-Roman period are completely alien to the gynocentric numale. The fact that there will always be sexually deviant noblemen, who are an extremely small minority, is in no way indicative of the mean.
