How important is game preservation?
>>
>>734306429
>file a report
Can't he outright sue them if it's that valuable?
>>
>>734306429
Extremely. This is exactly why.

50 copies in existence and one braindead customs agent can just *delete it from reality* because it looks like a “suspicious plastic square.” Physical media isn’t immortal, it’s just slower entropy.

People meme about “just emulate it bro” but if nobody dumps that floppy, that version of Tsukihime might as well have never existed. Companies don’t care, governments don’t care, and collectors hoard sealed shit like dragons instead of archiving it.

Game preservation isn’t about nostalgia, it’s about not letting media vanish because of incompetence, malice, or corporate apathy. The only reason half of 90s PC/console history is playable is because some turbo-autists refused to let it die.

Dump your discs. Scan your manuals. Archive everything. Don’t trust institutions to do it for you.
>>
are you retarded? the tsukihime disk was valuable because it was one of the original trial disks, not because it contained extremely rare data or some shit you fucking mongoloid retard. the actual game's data is already on the net, so your image is just completely irrelevant to your question. also this thread has already been made 1000 times before, 100000 times if we're talking about actual game preservation and not the tsukihime disk incident. the quality of this board sure has fallen sharply lately. what happened?

I "played" tsukihime and I'm really not sure what all of the fuss is about.MC is gay, you don't end up with the vampire, your "sister" isn't actually your sister, and there is no route to end up with Yumizuka. Melty Blood is at least a real game series, maybe that's why people love it so much?

Filing a report probably means filing an insurance claim, and the package was very likely fully insured for the price paid. No point suing since all you can really do is get the amount you paid back for it, any higher value is speculative.

The problem is if its too rare and obscure, you can't easily find it in a store. You'd need someone scouting for it, or have the store promote it. Both avenues would mean the item would be even more valuable due to the extra attention, in a way. There are some stupid obscure things I hunt for that only seem to appear in auction sites. I'd be a fool to go to Japan looking for them unless I knew for certain they were for sale at a specific store and no one bought it yet.
I think buying online is fine, but they probably should have shipped it with a bunch of other stuff. That Pokemon Yellow copy had the same issue I believe.
I mean, if you were a customs agent, what looks more suspicious?
>$3000 game being shipped by itself that weighs less than the cardboard its packaged in
or
>$3500 package with multiple items, weighing a decent amount, and one of the items just so happens to be valued at $3000
Still doesn't excuse what happened regardless.

It was just a regular floppy from 1999 anyway. Nasu was a nobody, he just bought a stack of 50 floppies, and copied the files from his computer manually on each of them. Then printed out the inserts. You can literally recreate this "invaluable historical artifact" yourself.

American customs employees, if you have never interacted with them, are literally the dumbest people on the planet.
To cut them some slack, some of it, at least for some of them, is probably just an act they put on because they're trying to stress people out and it's easier to just pretend you're a retard.
The customs person probably literally didn't know what a floppy disk was and thought it was a clam shell thing you could open and get the disk out of, and got angry when they couldn't figure out how to open it.
>>
>>734319384

Most gamers just play Madden and Call of Duty and Roblox and Fortnite and Minecraft. Of those, only the Minecraft autists will really archive everything. History is important no matter how insignificant it may be in the present day.

>>734306429
When I see shit like this happen, just realize that if you're in the US, the customs agents are retarded and there's a great chance they'll fuck it up. It's very important, especially when the same companies of the games which are the target of preservation wants to limit your experience with their games onwards.

I feel especially bad about the floppy situation because aside from now only 49 being left, it's part of the more obscure history that shaped Type-Moon and Fate/Tsukihime further down the line into the IP they are today. Getting that destroyed on the baseless grounds of insinuated pedophilia (Because not looking up the name of the items they're inspecting in case of doubt) is infuriating to the customer who is stuck between financially expensive options to combat it since he got the most attention for potential coverage at the moment, to those who value preservation (Because if you search us customs floppy on google or any search machine, the first news articles exclusively cover this case with the emphasis on the rarity of the property rather than focusing on the eroge elements with comment sections expressing their support for holding US customs accountable, rendering their argument in defense worthless) and to the Japanese who will feel more reluctant to sell their collectibles or items overseas (Shit got so bad even a few japanese politicians jumped on board of dogpiling US Customs).

Unironically, this is the most traction that Tsukihime has received since the release of the Near side Moon remake and it's primarily about every country dogpiling the US for not having any standards to not fuck up their job.
>>
>>734319178
Looking at some of the comments apparently the way the Japanese dude very carefully packaged it was reminiscent of how drugs are packaged so they tore that shit up looking for the drugs I guess. Seems weird to smash open the floppy but they really thought that shit was somewhere
>>
>>734320150
There are tools for tracking drugs. There are fucking tutorials online for safely dismantling and reassembling a floppy disk.

Because the Republican Party (Conservative) controlled Supreme Court (Highest court in America) just made a ruling that you cannot sue the Postal Service even if they intentionally withhold or destroy your mail (United States Postal Service v. Konan). This was done to push voter suppression so bad actors in the postal service can destroy or seize mail in ballots to interfere in future elections though.
However, the clear unintended consequence is shown in the OP where your average normalfag custom worker who sees anything anime will be allowed to destroy or 'lose' it, and you cannot seek damages even if it was done in malice.

But there's also this, >>734313527 NEVER under report the value of what you ship, you might save on some taxes, but if it's actually destroyed or lost during shipping, you're fucked if you need to collect on insurance.

>>734320150
It's also a sitution of 'The nail that sticks out gets hammered down' Where because it's so overly protected, it raises a red flag in of itself. Same thing happened with that Pokemon Yellow game that went through the grading scam system.

Typically, you'd get a notification from DHL about it. There are barely any records of items being destroyed in Germany because of the rating label for instance but rather a notice for refusing to deliver the item.

Adults only and Pornography are also two distinct matters. Closely tied together, yes, but ultimately separated.

>>
>>734306429
The only way to preserve it is to digitalise it.
Digital media can get corrupted so it's not fool proof but even then, it's possible to fix some digital media that's got corrupted. It's impossible to fix anything physical that's corrupted, the only thing you can do is hope that the data loss isn't too bad.

Personally I think game preservation is important. Part of who I am is inspired by the video games I played growing up, part of it is inspired by the games I played with my dad.
In the future when I have sons, do I want to rely on the gaming industrys future media to inspire my sons or do I want to share with them my childhood? It's an easy choice.
>>
>>734306429
Very.
You guys have no idea how much media, even digital ones of good quality are gone.

Take for example quality JAVs. Some faggot decided to host a lot of JAVs but in 720p (so that thirdies can stream it), then seeders die and rationalize it that people can stream it anyways. And now everyone can't find high quality JAVs and the only ones available are in shit quality.
>>
Letting some media die is not a bad thing, actually, especially when preserving it becomes too expensive and complicated.
For example, I was playing PIAS on PC-98. It's a visual novel that involves solving a murder and has adult scenes with the girls. The artistic quality is quite poor and the writing isn't the best. It's interesting for those who want to learn about the history of Japanese adventure games, but there's nothing really valuable there, culturally speaking. A simple record with a few screenshots and a description of the game would be enough to "preserve" that game.

Again: the idea that you can use the 2nd amendment to protect yourself from illegal search and seizure is laughable. A white man got executed in the street for having a legal carry that never left its holster. If you shoot an officer you are going to die horribly and none of the people bringing that death give a FUCK about your rights. They don't even know what they are to begin with.

>Customs agent mangles the case and cuts the disk into pieces
>...then repackages it and sends it off
What??? Did this actually happen or is it ragebait? I don't know how American customs works, but would they actually do this? Why?
>>
>>734331021
Yes they do this
>Why
Because if they didn't send the mangled remains to you they'd have to pay for the failed delivery without you having to go through a mess of paperwork you'll probably give up on

No.the 2nd amendment is to protect yourself from niggers who think vandalism and robbery are justifiable. Want to protect yourself from an illegal search? Dont open the door. Simple as.

>The artistic quality is quite poor and the writing isn't the best.
You could say that about anything. You could say the original Star Wars isn't worth preserving because it's too grainy and there are a couple of plot holes. You could say your favorite media isn't worth preserving because of any arbitrary flaw.
>>
>>734306590
I worked somewhere that's responsible for a lot of global packages (not an actual "mail carrier" though) and in most countries outside the EU you'd have to send decoys and shit because everything would get raped by customs (I realise it now sounds like it was actually shipping contraband), but even in "real" countries customs etc can generally rip the shit out of your post/parcels and just declare "we thought it looked funny"
>>
>>734330482
You conveniently left out the part where you instigated by claiming that "erm actually it's a good thing when strangers break your stuff"

You dont have to project and justify your impotence and vulnerability, you know? Just get a gun yourself. It's legal and everything.

Sure. You're right. There's nothing you can do. Just kneel down quietly and let the dirty cop put you down like the livestock you are.

Warrantless searches performed by niggers from 4chan
You made it about cops and started pushing your helplessness narrative which makes zero sense as the fear of getting blown apart is why the cops dont go performing illegal searches on everyone like the stasi (I've never had one). It's why the second amendment exists in the first place.

How is this "rare item" different from copying the data to floppy disk and putting it in a plastic bag with a printed paper inside
This is a doujin era amateur stuff, it didn't go through a special printing process to produce this, copy and pasting on to a floppy by-hand is literally what they did to make the fucking demo disk
>>
>>734334024
The "original" 0s and 1s are worth more than the copied 0s and 1s.
For some reason.

The only real game preservation is piracy.
All people trying to do it by "legal means" will be cucked by corporations.

To a normie customs agent they do.

>You could say your favorite media isn't worth preserving because of any arbitrary flaw.
Of course not.
You talk as if art were something totally subjective, as if it weren't immediately obvious that the RPG Maker game "Rape Whistle", made in an afternoon by a teenager as a joke, was something disposable.
A lot of games are disposable, especially today when anyone can make and release their games to the public.
Of course, in an ideal situation, preserving everything is desirable, but there is no ideal situation, and the obsession with trying to preserve absolutely every game will only lead to an unsustainable situation.
