Anything that subverts at least one of those things will become a somewhat interesting level. For example, in the case of >>734349872 you have more concise level design (the desert itself is actually confined despite initial appearances) and unique gameplay mechanics (breaking out of jail in the town and freeing the carpenters and having to follow a specific path through the desert so you don't get lost in the sandstorm). And at the end of that, your reward is something visually interesting in the spirit temple and its outer area, which also contains its own unique mechanics, level design, and visual intrigue.
