You could certainly argue that there is no difficulty to this particular challenge however even accounting for that, claiming that Joe (or anyone else who fails this minigame the first time) has "motor failure" is hilariously hyperbolic. It happens to me from time to time and I've been playing games for hours almost daily since I was a child. Mistakes happen! I used 64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1 and 2 as the standard. If a given mechanic would have appeared in one of those four games at least once, I counted it as legitimate. That means specific powerups, collection goals, visual puzzles, and even "Go here" goals all counted. And that's why I was even willing to grant you that so many were duplicates.

And again, you have to consider that not everything can be Darker Side tier platforming challenge if they want to make the game also functionally enjoyable for small children who haven't quite developed the dexterity or hand eye coordination for the harder stuff yet.

They fall into categories. I excluded moons where you just talk to NPCs who aren't in hard to reach places. Moons where you ground pound in a clearly marked spot, including with the Rumble feature. And moons that are just sitting out in the open that don't even present a mild platforming challenge.
If they're on the main path or require wall jumps, triple jumps or hat jumps, I counted them. I also counted all of the Moons you have to grow from seeds, because they constitute an exploration challenge and a restricted platforming challenge which are usually meaningfully distinct from each other even though the overall goal is the same.

Most of the wasted time in Odyssey is a product of adding a bunch of empty space to make the environments feel bigger. Most of the moons themselves are fine. It's totally acceptable to criticize Odyssey for having a lot of empty space. It does. But you can't really say there are an unusually large amount of trivial or meaningless Moons.

It’s a game for kids. My nephew is about 13 now, but he got the Switch 1 when he was around 9. He has 700 moons in "Super Mario Odyssey". His younger sister has over 750 moons. They’ve been playing the game casually for fucking years. The game was basically part of their childhood.
So Nintendo knows what it’s doing, I’d say. It studied PC sandbox games like Minecraft, Roblox, and similar titles in depth and started applying some of those formulas in its own way. Judging by how the kids I know have interacted with Mario Odyssey, I’d say Nintendo is doing the right thing.

The #1 dumb response to criticism is to assume that a suggested change will be implemented without anything else in the game changing. They're both level-based, but the levels are big. If you wanna call Odyssey open world anyway, be my guest, since one may have a point about Odyssey being "diet open world". But you could also make the same case for Sunshine or 64 if you wanna be reductionist about it. Very open, and you're only really gated in progression to the next area by how much of those games' Power Stars or equivalents you've gathered in total. Typical 3D collectathon progression. Sure, I could buy that. Levels being bigger with more things to collect is the main gameplay loop that separates Odyssey from especially Sunshine. Hell, if you want to remove the part where loading zones happen, Sunshine would more easily qualify for open world than Odyssey since you're 99% of the time contained to just different sections of Isle Delfino.
But Bananza has defined end goals for each level. You can outright avoid collecting Banandium and can still legitimately reach the end of each level. You're free to progress once you beat the boss, making it much more linear than the average 3D Mario entry. Pretty sure the only mandatory thing to grab is just X amount of gold. The levels aren't that big, sub-layer by sub-layer, and are relatively self-contained. You cannot just putz around the endgame areas from the word go like you can in BotW or Xenoblade X or Pokemon Scarlet/Violet.
