I also counted all of the Moons you have to grow from seeds, because they constitute an exploration challenge and a restricted platforming challenge which are usually meaningfully distinct from each other even though the overall goal is the same.Most of the wasted time in Odyssey is a product of adding a bunch of empty space to make the environments feel bigger. Most of the moons themselves are fine. It's totally acceptable to criticize Odyssey for having a lot of empty space. It does. But you can't really say there are an unusually large amount of trivial or meaningless Moons.

If you wanna call Odyssey open world anyway, be my guest, since one may have a point about Odyssey being "diet open world". But you could also make the same case for Sunshine or 64 if you wanna be reductionist about it. Very open, and you're only really gated in progression to the next area by how much of those games' Power Stars or equivalents you've gathered in total. Typical 3D collectathon progression. Sure, I could buy that. Levels being bigger with more things to collect is the main gameplay loop that separates Odyssey from especially Sunshine. Hell, if you want to remove the part where loading zones happen, Sunshine would more easily qualify for open world than Odyssey since you're 99% of the time contained to just different sections of Isle Delfino.But Bananza has defined end goals for each level. You can outright avoid collecting Banandium and can still legitimately reach the end of each level. You're free to progress once you beat the boss, making it much more linear than the average 3D Mario entry. Pretty sure the only mandatory thing to grab is just X amount of gold. The levels aren't that big, sub-layer by sub-layer, and are relatively self-contained. You cannot just putz around the endgame areas from the word go like you can in BotW or Xenoblade X or Pokemon Scarlet/Violet.
