Increased realism lead to less actual art direction. There were very careful considerations on how to make textures look lit up, now you just have a lighting engine that makes everything look like shit.

Auto Modelista (2002) had a nice art style and it's not really an arcade racer (for the time).
I think devs just gave up since all the big ones build their games for multiplayer only. You can still get cool styles in the indie scenes.

Okay it's not any one specific thing, it's just being surrounded by these people who are not gamers, not racers, hell majority of the dev team doesn't even own a driving license being a car guy in that team makes me feel like I'm the weird one and not them. A good game let alone a good racing game could never be made in such environment.
This may sound obvious but it hits just that much harder when you see it first hand. The memes are real, the game you are looking forward to in 2026 is by vast majority made by tonedeaf people who hate games and hate cars. The 2026 racing game will not be a good one and marketing is almost completely a lie.

>>
>>734958865
Okay serious answer this time: You'll want to use manual transmission and downshift around the curves. It's been a while since I've played but two main patterns I remember were downshifting to 2 and then back up to 4 out of some turns, and downshifting to 1 and then 3 and then 4 for sharper turns. Drastically downshifting makes your car's tires lose grip and makes the car start to spin which you can take advantage of and use to drift around corners. I don't think there's an equivalent mechanic like that with the automatic transmission, so you have to get comfortable with manual.

Still the king baby. Jokes aside, don't be shy and join us this afternoon
Redout 2 looks really amazing in terms of speed and graphics, but ultimately i still think it has a glaring issue that sooner or later renders it boring: despite such speeds, the game seems safe as fuck. Railings everywhere instead of aerial sections, lots of health, seemingly inability to fly off the track, LOOONG straight segments instead of sharp curves to anti-grav drifting or simply turning for dear life and hope you don't get too much damage

I mean, where's that sense of danger in the game's very mechanics that ends in excitement??

The reporting gearing doesn't work. Most of those corner you take in 2nd or 3rd gear.
It's a 4WD but the kicker is that all 4 wheels turn at the same time so you get insane cornering.
The clutch turns on the jet engine boost at the back of the car.
Somehow despite all this all the physics are the default assetto corsa ones

They needed to be attractive in the arcade to sell themselves as you walked by. The nu-industry is generally hostile to the idea of trying to appeal to people while believing mobile aesthetics genuinely look good.

I recently started GRID Legends. It's pretty okay but there is something I can't describe about the handling model that pisses me off a little. Anyways so far it's been a solid 6/10 so I'm not too fussed about the $15 I spent on it.

People who say older racing games are only good because of nostalgia can go fuck themselves. I grew up with NFS like most people, nfs 2,3, porsche, underground and so on.
Didn't play Gran turismo till like 2019, it was great. Didn't play midnight club until like 2023 and it was also great. But not all old racing games are good, played juiced and I've put that thing in the trash where it belongs.
>>

Because racing games were arcade style games in the early days
Now it is mostly realism and some people drop thousands of dollars on simulation stuff
Can crash without the risk of paying more for insurance for the next 5 years, possible injury
One newfag on /o/ tried to show off at his first meet and his car (with bald tires) went off the cliff and im pretty sure he was air lifted to a hospital
Sold my shitbox focus st when I moved to the mountains and switched to a 4 wheel drive pickup so no more fun drives 4 me, so maybe someday ill get into the simulation shit
I'll stick to whimsical kart racers in the meantime, normally I've only been into Mario kart, Diddy Kong racing, or crash bandicoot racing stuff but this newer sonic kart racer ain't bad despite its flaws
If you miss the old fun of arcade style racing games just try a kart racer, take the fun pill

All around better, but the first one has more track diversity and puke tubes.
Campaign is much better though, since it dripfeeds you new fashion all the time.

I really like the new turbo system.
When you activate your super turbo, you strongly speed up for a few seconds, but collisions or braking deactivate it and it has to recharge. But if you don't activate it as soon as possible, you're not going to win.
Both the super turbo and normal turbo now feed on your health, so you don't want to crash.
It's very risk vs reward and has an intense feel.
No weapons though, so it's pure racism.

The campaign is so extremely bloated and the ai can't keep up with dual boosting.
Really weird game, all the skill is about hitting those boost stack sections. Admittedly on some tracks it's very hard, but that makes the game less about racing and more mastering the tracks in a glorified time attack.
Still the genre is so dead and I still care about it so I appreciate they made a sequel

>>734964947
There's a lot of handling settings you can try to make it better (some people like to turn off all the smoothing) but yeah you can't spin the wheels, that's the biggest problem for the series, it's like all cars have their TCS cranked to max and you never over-steer.
But yea the game get away with it because of the setting really.

Most games really like making weapons unstoppable and dedicated to the sole goal of "fuck the guy in 1st place super hard."

>>
>>734955013
The real reason is that companies universally chase the “sim” trend because of all the browns that buy those games
Sim racers are inherently brown because they involve driving cars that no brown could realistically ever afford or even see in real life
Meanwhile arcade racers are the white man’s subgenre because they embrace feelings of freedom and adrenaline only reserved to people who have established societal presence

They are different. Think 80s F1 vs current F1.
R1 is hairy and visecral, handling is heavy and commital, and track design and ship physics are just out of sync enough that racing clean equals being slow, you have to constantly compromise, improvise and readjust. It also has ships that differentiate more as you go up the performance tree, beginner ships are all pretty similar but class 4 makes some ships feel like playing completely different games (Conq, my beloved). It has a few annoyances like selectable powerups but we all know speed core and turbo are the only options.
R2 is a lot more streamlined, ships are more responsive, getting a good time means racing clean to preserve your health and then unleashing double boost on designated double boost straights, it's all very coherent, some would say to a fault (me, fuck Tilkedromes, give me Spa and Nurburgring). It's a lot more conducive to getting into the flow state, but it's not as raw. It's not bad, it's just a different experience, and also worth playing, you might like one or the other. The one thing I can kick it for is that tuning in this game gentrifies the ships instead of differentiating them, like in something like Most Wanted where every car can do everything well when fully tuned.
>>
>>734955436
Thank you. At least someone has self awareness. Need For Speed Most Wanted was like the hollywood slop movies on dvd at blockbuster. Underground was the equivalent of nigger MTV shows like Pimp My Ride. Even Midnight Club 3 had too much American media slop in it.

Unlikely, and Japanese rarely have that kind of "I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm sure I'll be the best at it" kind of confidence lots of not very smart people in the west have. You can be a car guy without a license (see- every kid who loves cars), and I can totally see a jap dev who really isn't one coming home and doing autistic levels of research on what makes it all tick.

I love Crazy Taxi 1 and could (and will) play that shit for hours on end, but the sequels just don't do it for me, and I feel like part of it is how the original San Fran map is a near perfect loop where you quickly learn where the problem areas are and where you can rack up time or score (or both). 2 and 3's maps are both too big and too boring, and the Crazy Jump being not just able to cheese traffic but also required for jumping certain gaps or buildings just irks me in the wrong way. Even the extra map in the Dreamcast version of CT1 just doesn't feel as fun as the original loop.
gena is hot as fuck in the original too and worse in both art and voice in every rerelease

So far, I prefer 3. but 4 is very close because of the seasons mechanic. 5 was a downgrade in terms of everything, vibe, map, music, etc. I'm going to buy an xbox one when I have a bit more money so I can play the xbox one port of horizon 2 and from what I read you can play xbox 360 discs on it as well so horizon 1 is also on the menu. They can be as casual as you want them to be. You can turn on abs/traction control/braking assists/driving line or braking line/auto or manual transmission. I only used abs and braking line assists from the 3 games I posted in that image. Think of these games like most wanted 2005 instead of ridge racer in terms of driving physics. You can drift to turn but you will be wayy slower. You need to brake hard for turns generally and basic irl rules apply for taking the correct lines through corners.

What I'm on about is
>the sim market being stuck on being the next great GT3 sim, as if we don't have too many of those already, completely ignoring the rest of the motorsport world, past and present
>arcade racers being the domain of indies that are hyperfocused on low poly aesthetics or ONE singular aspect of an old arcade racing games, either in perpetual early access or released as an unfinished game that gets boring after half an hour
>major franchises just fucking dying like NFS or becoming hollow husks like Forza
There are only a few studios that actually stick to a concept and fully flesh it out, like Bugbear with Wreckfest (being based around american demolition derby, scandinavian folk racing and UK banger racing), the solo dev behind Grand Pro Circuit or Genki with TXR (although the newest TXR kinda has some growing pains, which I'm hoping they'll iron out in the next game), but at the very least Genki made an effort in actually visiting a variety of tuning shops to reflect the real life mods one could do to a car, whereas bigger studios like Forza are stuck recycling car models and bodykits made for the original Forza Motorsport (2005)

I never had it that bad and I got ~650 hours combined with ETS2/ATS, but yeah, I did recently end up lowering the spawn rate for random events or whatever because it's bullshit to have to drive an extra 100+ miles whenever it happens. If SCS had added more side roads to minimize the distance we'd have to drive when they're not on highways/interstates, it wouldn't be a problem.

The best F-Zero game (GX) is probably better than every WipEout game except 3 SE for me. Nintendo should make another F-Zero, the market seems really open for it now, Captain Falcon is easily one of the most known Nintendo figures at this point too. Sony isn't going to do anything with WipEout ever again, Daytona is dead, even MK World is a weird spot and its going to sell like hotcakes anyway. They could start working on it now and have it out in 2 years for perfect timing.

Sony could realistically do the same for WipEout too but they won't. They'd probably make it into a live service like they did GT7 anyway.

>>
>>734955013
One problem is feature creep and game complexity. If you think of the awesome racing games that released for the N64, PS1, and Saturn no major publisher could get away with releasing something so "basic." The retarded kids these would say "what do you mean you just race? Where's the progression? What's the game loop?"
Combine that with the fact that every game now needs to have hyper graphics for retards, it means that simple games without additional monetization are not viable since they don't sell enough to cover costs.
To put a finer point on it, every single person who buys a nice new GPU has made gaming worse.

>>
>>734974613
The simulated scrolling really never conveyed a sense that you were driving a car. These games were effectively dodging simulators.
Even mode 7 on SNES, while pretty imperfect, was significantly better than this. Racing games truly were not good until 3D, which is interesting since this really isn't true for most genres.

Look how fun and colorful that shit looks. The blockyness also adds to the feel of the game. Goddamn, this shit just transports me straight back to my childhood. Do new racing games have this? No, they do not. And there's your answer.
>>
>>734955013
Both arcade racers and anti-gravity racers fell out of fashion. Now it's all just sim slop, and that's detrimental to the genre because 90% of people pick one game in that genre and refuse to budge.

because they all want to be simslop/semi-simslop now and simslop is inherently not fun (the thousand+ dollars you could """invest""" in a decent """sim""" setup could go towards one (1) day at a track with a rented car (inb4 ">but anon it's 1 day!!!" better to live one day like a lion than a hundred years like a lamb) with very few exceptions (horizon 6 will probably be kino unlike 4 and 5, dakar 18 and dakar desert rally are super fun and novel)
if you want to play something FUN try out the initial d games, specifically arcade stage 6 and the new one "the arcade" (if you know where to look you don't even have to pay the teknoparrot jews)
>>
>>735014372
You see, GX is the Melee of racing games. On a base level, it's not that complex, but it's so fucking broken under the sheets that the skill ceiling is infinite. You can easily go so fast that those wide-ass tracks are still not enough.

Twist around that balljoint axis = one analog input. The other analog input is the gyro that you can enable, which was a staple feature for the Sidewinder series.

It's what I call too much "realism".
Everything feels slower, trying to drift like you are delivering Tofu just makes you spin out of control 4/5 of the times unless you slow down the car to crawling speed, but somehow every cars feels slippery while also weighting like dump truck.
It's "realistic" but not "fun".
I miss Burnout.

Eh, both Melee and GX are at their most fun somewhere inbetween full timmy and full fox only final destination. For Melee, it's small regionals full of people who learned from youchub and play weird characters, for GX it's just enough advanced techs to beat Master cups and staff ghosts. Going full FOFD or 5 shiftboosts per second for WR respectively is overhyped, but taking a bit more from the game than was intended is genuinely fun and adds many layers of complexity already.
>x

True, "sim" or arcade, I like my racing games to be games, not just a playset to dick around in.
Now if you can do both then great, but if you can only do one, do the former. Otherwise it's just aimless.
>>735017938
If i'm being honest, the only one I know with a sim setup is my cousin who also races and drifts actual cars in his off time.
It's mostly mx-5s and a modded nissan 350z for drifting but it's still pretty cool.
>>
>>735018104
>not just a playset to dick around in.
I think BeamNG is the only exception I made for it, but that's because I got tired of it getting a proper campaign mode after a full decade of waiting. Least it has those time trial challenges I guess with often-times gimmick vehicles.
>>
>>735017938

True, The driving in GTA, is on par with most mid arcade racers, minus boost, so why bother with Midnight club.
I do wonder, does anyone from R San Diego work on GTA's driving?
>>
Anything traffic heavy that's sim? We already got plenty of that on the arcade end. Assetto Corsa has 'traffic' mods but they're basic as shit.

Sims are nice for racing, but everyone seems to focus on boring GT classes on full slicks, and doing so on regular closed tracks. Sims would be way more fun with more car and track diversity. Gimme tight city tracks like PGR and Grid, gimme open road courses, gimme NASCAR racing around Nurburgring and Legends around makeshift shipping container tracks, all the stuff we are not allowed to have IRL.
