I'd love for future RE games to explore this set-up of switching between survival-horror and action-horror further, would be a waste if its just a one-and-done with this game.

Hey so my friend showed me RE9 and he got to an apartment complex (cedar something) and suddenly 3 SWAT zombies spawned, like they glitched in. He shot them and no blood or anything came out. Just finished this game. I don't think it's as bad as /v/ says, but now that I'm done with it all I can think was that it was wasted potential.Grace section at the care centre was great. It was like an RE7 that was actually scary and forced you to plan your path through a giant mansion, similar to RE1/2 back in the day. But it was way too short and by the time you got to the lodge and then church, it became almost entirely linear and Grace was so strong she could kill everything in her path. Also the only new gun she got was her personal pistol, which just felt like a slightly stronger flavour of the one she starts with (the molotovs and acid canisters are too scarce). And of course in the basement Emily just teleports around so it got to the point I could literally tell when she'd pop out of a sewer vent.Then there's Leon's gameplay. He controls just as well as he does in the RE4R and some of the setpiece encounters are really neat and hectic like the Church defense. But most of his gameplay takes place in raccoon city with boring braindead zombies and the environment was super drab. RC should've been overrun with vegetation like a proper post apocalypse world like The Last of Us. Also it sucks how he starts out his segment with a full loadout (magnum, rifle, shotgun, smg) and all of the buyable guns are straight upgrades - there's no choice or personal skill expression like in RE4/R. I also wasn't a fan of any of the gun zombies and Hunk's squad where it turns into a REALLY bad 2003 cover shooter (you can't even switch shoulder cameras lmao). It just reminded me of RE6, which was unironically a better TPS since you had much better movement and melee options to make up for enemies having firearms.(1/2)

However RE9 irked me more than usual since there's so many little plotholes like Victor randomly infecting the cop in the beginning who could've killed Grace if she was so important to him, Grace supposedly being the DNA mother of all the orphanage girls and thus being too young by current year, and Leon's infamous "I didn't hit her vitals" line. Also Zeno was complete wasted potential basically used to setup more Connections bait that hasn't been resolved in over 3 games now (inb4 that's the point). I also wasn't a fan of the excessive focus on memberberries where we got literal MGS4-style flashbacks to RE2R... and yet somehow no mention of Claire or Ada. It was also weird how there was memberberries for RE1/3 stuff like plant 42, the spider, and nemesis. At one point I was half expecting a las plagas reference to show up.Overall I'd peg this game as an 8/10, maybe a 7/10 if we factor in the idea that it's supposed to be RE's big 30 year anniversary game. I think everyone saying it's a 10/10 game are shills or riding high off the Capcom paid marketing hype, but it's definitely not the 3/10 doomposters think either. God her section is so boring. The gimmicks were interesting enough on the first playthrough but ever since then it's just a chore. To an extent it's not possible to avoid trial and error, especially when it's a new player who doesn't know how much they should be shooting or running away. But there's some things where logic should apply and it doesn't. For example headshots barely do more damage, and letting your reticle focus has much higher damage multiplier in comparison, so people will be struggling to get headshots and miss when they could be more efficient doing focused shots. Grace's melee does no damage, but it will if you push the zombie into a wall. There's no way for the player to know this. I had 15 magnum rounds by the time I reached the final stand off with the girl monster, thinking Grace would eventually face bosses, but she never does and that's the last time Grace gets to use the requiem. I could have blasted so many zombies had I known it's pointless to hoard the ammo for it. Just to try it out I shot the girl monster with all my magnum rounds to see if it would temporarily kill her like Leon did in the beginning cutscene, but she's invincible. Then there's chunk who I didn't know Grace could kill, how was I supposed to know one stalker enemy was killable and one wasn't? Obviously it's not a huge deal because standard is fine even for someone brand new to RE, and it is satisfying to start a second playthrough and know how to do everything (except for stuff you have to look up online). But the game could have done a better good job of being consistent with what you can and can't do.
