How do we fix fighting games? It just feels like the genre has become stale. No one is excited for the new Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur or DOA. It's just going to be more of the same shit. Samey gameplay though probably downgraded from the previous games, more realistic visuals and other slop like that, pandering to soulless e-sports trash. SF6 adding mediocre characters, Fatal Fury is adding some cool characters in the future but the base roster is too mid to care. Tekken is dead. Mortal Kombat ain't happening for awhile.

How do we save this genre from just being more of the same slop? Should there be massive visual and gameplay changes for some of these games in the future? What the next big ambitious thing these companies will try to do with these games?

More traditional fighting game inputs but still simple enough to still appeal to their audience. Faster gameplay with actual good animations for once. Still bloody and has Fatalities but cartoonish and less realistic so it doesn't get banned in other countries..... Then maybe we can finally see Scorpion in Street Fighter 7.

in general, games should do large rosters again. If the dev time is going to be long anyway, might as well fit as many characters in and worry about balance later instead of trying to make a triple A product with features that cater to everyone + e-sports

I'm just going to say shit and I don't even care if I'm right.
The first problem is that fighting games suck and fuckin Smash is infinitely more fun to play than any fighting game ever
if you go between games you already know, you CANNOT tell me there is something more satisfying than landing a Captain Falcon knee combo to finish a stock
I've played Tekken, I've played Street Fighter, I've played Soul Calibur
The equivalent in other fighting games just doesn't exist
I'm not even saying Smash is that good, that's just simply how bad fighting games are
You can take a stock early as fuck with some ball in mouth dunking, there's no equivalent in fightan, and in fact, there's nothing that makes a fighting game player hate their life more than a match they lost that took 30 seconds while in Smash someone watching their stocks deplete in five seconds understands the taste of scrotum and knows they stink

I like the characters it has, only problem I really have with it is that Chun is annoying but she’s rare to see on Fightcade and she’s still manageable against most of her players. But Alpha 3 is fairly active if you want a big roster. Surprisingly not many people in the lobby use V ism either. I’ve been getting started on it myself lately.

KoFXI has a cool challenge mode that could probably be extrapolated into a teaching tool with some tweaked presentation of it. I haven't played much world tour in 6 so I don't know how much of it is comprised of unique objectives or if it's just varying conditions of "KO the other person"

Pic related is how you save Soul Calibur. Revitalize the weapons based fighter by making every hit matter. Make it Buddy blade.

The game doesn’t need to be realistic, gritty or serious. But the combat needs to feel tense, every second of a match should feel like your on a razors edge of life or death. Hits to specif body parts should disable limbs, changing the properties of moves and character mobility. The tempo should be dynamic, transition from tense to chaotic in an instant and rounds quick. Multiplayer / / pve team battle modes (3v3, 4v4 etc) with rougelike elements for gear, weapons or items could breathe new life into a tired ranked ladder climbing.

And of course plenty of tasteful outfits for the gooner whales to profit from. Soul calibur needs new blood and it’s one of the few casual enough fighters to succeed with a wide audience if handled correctly

I certainly like it more than Alpha 3, im not sure why but that game feels much shittier to play in comparison, maybe because it feels a lot faster. Don't care for the different ism's much either, and how they changed custom combos and split up special moves between different ism's. People do that with fighting games too though. That's part of the point. People who want to blame something and make excuses will do it. They don't need teammates. Like fighting games are the genre that gave us scrub quotes. There's countless memes, jokes, and genuine real life examples for fighting games about people coping over losing instead of owning it, even some pro players are notorious for it. But somehow FG players find a way to suck their own dicks and act like it's a genre for zen masters despite that.

Meanwhile I've played team games with people that literally struggled to get any kills and were routinely on the bottom of the scoreboard, with no possible way to blame anybody, that were happy to keep queuing. I've heard players in CS fall over each other trying to take blame for a round loss. I've seen people lose 1v3 clutches and immediately acknowledge out how they fucked up and sincerely say it was their bad. It's not even an uncommon thing.

There needs to be an entry point game for the genre the same way Doom or Half Life is seen as an entry point game for FPS. The basic controls of your average 2d fighting game are too different from pretty much everything else. That or a better way to retain new players so they can keep playing with each other. The lifecycle of this genre is that new players join, most lose interest, then any newer players just leave since online is filled with nothing but vets who've played this genre for decades and single player is too limited.

What's so bad about it? I don't want to play the same game for 20 years; people like new ideas, new stages, characters, stories, and animations. I wouldn't mind if, say, Arcana Heart 4 come out and it's the same game with a couple of new characters, new stages and slightly tweaked moveset/balance. At least people would see "4" in it's title and give it a try.

Fighting games are carried by their artstyle and music, take those away and you realize how boring the genre is. It's also why indie fighters struggle since they don't have money for that.

You need to put an end to esports so devs design games that are fun to play rather than games that are convenient for spectators and people who play them as a job. Then you go back to shitty online so devs stop slowing down gameplay with it in mind, but this one is never happening.
Best thing you can do is look at old games and play them with your friends. There's plenty available there between fightcade and a bunch of the sprite-era anime fighters getting rollback.
