Boomers will pretend the left looks better.
>>
I played the game on PC originally with my 3DFX Voodoo, so the right is how I remember it.

You didnt see the game if you didn't play on a CRT
>>
Max res good, texturing filtering bad.
>>
>>734992940
Left looks better. Right is more functional in a stealth game.
>>
you're suppose to play it on tiny crts, not giant lcds
>>
>>734992940
bi-linear filtering looks profoundly shit, it smears away all contrast in the textures. Also, I am pretty sure everyone back in the era was creaming over Vaseline rendering.

Pretend?

>>734992940
yeah, because the right looks like smeared shit
>>
boomer here, they both look like shit
>>
>>734992940
This comparison is just as disingenuous.
The original looks completely different on crt
>>
>>734992940
left isn't better but right is too clean. duckstation downsampling is the best look
>>
>>734993583
you're right, it was far worse
>>
>>734992940
I like high resolution rendering but I genuinely think only mentally retarded people like the look of bilinear filtering applied to ultra low resolution textures

Well, it works when you make assets with filtering in mind, it wasn't the case for ps1

I find the best way to render 5th generation games is 8x native internal resolution, downsampled to 640x480 and output to a CRT.

The left does look better.
Right looks like plastic. It looks super fake and cartoony, with the edges being far more pronounced.
For a good example, look at snakes hair.
On the right it looks like a cube. But you don't see the cube on the left. You see hair. It's vague enough for your brain to auto correct, whereas the right well that can only be a plastic cube.

I get not wanting to clean up 2D games, but that nostalgia fag, crt fag arguments don't work on 3D games, why the fuck would you want them to look blurry and shit when tehy can look clean and you can see what the devs were actually going for if not for the weak hardware>>734995481
>>
>>734999254
Devs would have continuously adjusted what they were making based on how it looked on their hardware, which would most likely have been a CRT.
In some cases it looks better, in some cases it looks worse.

SOUL vs soulless
>>
>>734999254
>you can see what the devs were actually going for
What you get IS what they were going for since they were working within their limitations, at least in the case of console games.

>best way to render 5th generation games is 8x native internal resolution, downsampled to 640x480
if you're outputting to genuine crt why bother with this?
>>
>>734999372
>In some cases it looks better, in some cases it looks worse.
The pic he linked to is a good example. Yeah the Gundam looks better, but the stars look like shit.
>>
>>734999254
The problem is entirely based on the game and source material. Some games that have shit low native resolutions may be hiding some great assets and work beneath that which look pretty great running at a higher res. But some games are so blocky, simplistic, and simply not very good at a higher res at the native occludes some of their issues and simplicity.
>>
>>734992940
No. I just play Twin Snakes instead.
I've still got my copy on hand or i could just use dolphin if i want to bring it up to 4k resolution or something. If only i could mod Kojimas original music back in then I'd see no issues with it. It's faults are the faults of the original game in design.
>>
@735000912
no
and no (You) for you
>>
>>734992940
Both look good on a CRT.
>>
>>735000973
Yeah it is. The guards are too stupid in the original and in Twin Snakes they actually look for you in an area upon alert. You can't just just jump into a locker and disappear like you could in the original, if they have been alerted in their sweeps they will check every locker. It's legitimately better because of MGS2 AI
And that is why i will continue to play it.
>>
>>734992940
They both look shit.
Original resolution on a CRT is where it's at.
It doesn't matter if you're running RGB or Composite or Svideo, as long as it's on a CRT.
>>
>>734999856
I looks demonstrably better.
>>
>>734997509
It shows. It need some work, for sure; but I like the sentiment.
Over at /g/, you never owned a CRT unless you had a cat sleeping on top of it.
>>
>>734999254
Because it depends from game to game you moron
Not all games were made equal, and some games look good uprendered and some look shitty

Unironically the best solution for 5th gen is a blurry 60s CRT
This is hard to actually emulate with current resolutions, might need 8/16K res

Composite/RF is a must for PSX too
>>
>>734999856
Nta but native resolution for that era is usually half what a normal crt can display, aka 240 instead of the full 480. And even when 2x native aliasing can still be jarring even on a crt. When you downsample to 480 from a much higher internal resolution you get a clean image without it being overly sharp and jarring, the 2d elements dont clash with the 3d elements. It looks especially good on games like resident evil 2 where on native hardware the 3d elements look rough and out of place and when emulated at modern resolutions its the 2d elements that look pixelated and out of place, downsampling to 480 just looks right on a crt.
>>
>>735000109
Disagree on the stars
But some of the textures in the Gundam look jaggier
>>
>>734992940
i love smearing vaseline over all my video game textures
>>

i'm a zoomer and i think left (with crt) looks better.

>>
>>734992940
I prefer right, but I can't pretend it's objective
>>
>>734992940
If not for texture filtering, right would be good.
>>
>>734992940
I played this game on PS1, PC, PS3 and Vita
I love it no matter how it looks
