It's not much of a CRPG, the character/party builds are basic. Diablo 2 character builds are way more interesting than IWD1 char/party builds.

As for actual "role playing", there is very little of that in this highly linear dungeon crawler. There are a handful of dialogue choices, that's it.

Not really. A GM has the power to define what happens, but IWD is a linear dungeon crawl. There is little scope for role playing. You could do something like that a lot better in BG1 since it's nonlinear and there are lots of different encounters and NPCs to fuck with. I guess you could write fanfics about the characters while you play, but are you REALLY going to do that, anon?

I did that in the past actually, but instead of writing I was taking the actions I took in say Deus Ex and DX:HR and I was building a separate internal thought process of a character that had specific goals and methods that were different from my own.

IWD is more akin to a dungeon delving adventure. Go in, kill everything, sell loot and up to the next dungeon. There's some sort of story to press you forward. Side quests are scarce and few.
In short, the game is 95% battles, and it's really good if you like controlling 6 characters and giong from lvl1 mooks to lvl 30(enhaced edition) demigods.

Is there active pause? I remember being infuriated by Planescape not letting me queue spells during pause which changed my strategy completely from actively casting spells as I planned to into just buffing the hell out of the warrior and letting him clean the room. I didn't mind the combat there much and difficulty of Modron Maze is something that is one of my most vivid memories of the Planescape, overshadowing most of the story in the game.

The biggest flaw to IWD imo is the world doesn't feel nearly as fleshed out as Baldur's Gate 1 did.
BG1 felt very lived in while IWD was kind of like, a generic D&D setting that was very surface level.
I tried playing the sequel, which supposedly integrates more of that based off the first game, and I never got in to it.

just buy the ee and dont use the new kits which could ruin the balance. theres not a whole lot to it. the rules are simple and there arent really any builds. do the extent there are stats they maximally add like, 5% to hit and 2 to damage. so really you can just jump in blind. going in blind is kind of the point. early dnd is simulationist, the dungeon isnt dangerous if you go in with supernatural powers and foreknowledge.

you'll figure out if its for you soon enough. only thing is make sure to buy everyone smashing weapons to fight skellies in the first dungeon
