Morally, Fontaine is much worse because he was just an opportunistic sociopath who happened to find some extraordinary opportunities. In some ways he understood Ryan's ideology better than Ryan did, but he only cared insofar as he could exploit it for his own personal gain. And his boss battle sucked. Ryan was a much more sympathetic guy who fell prey to his own hubris.At least that's how they came off in the OG game. Buried at Sea completely raped their characters and turned them into cartoon villains.
