By the third area, I feel like they should introduce a major new feature to improve the pacing, or just stop using the same formulaic story mission structure. MHS2 did it as well, you had this central region to farm dens and the story sent you down two or three individual hallways that were connected to the main region to fight a monster at the end. The pacing is worse here because these areas are 3-5 times larger, it feels like a chore S-ranking these regions by the third chapter since they don't change up how the player approaches ticking off these checklists. It doesn't help that the game is constantly dumping fetch quests on the player after every cutscene. There's just a lot of small things that end up bloating the game which gets in the way of the fun part.

The newer ones that start with W are generally much more forgiving, but they have more of the "tracking" aspect you were asking about, let you take advantage of environmental traps around the monster lairs, and pretend to have a living, breathing world and such. It's just window dressing either way though. For almost any hunt in the series you can do nothing but hit the monster until it dies if you don't want to deal with all that extra stuff.
