Game of the generation
>>
>oh right
>that happened
>>
I, too, watched Vinny talk about his UFO 50 merch.
>>
>>735006694
>*Most forgettable, forced, overrated game of the generation
>>
>you don't get it it's DELIBERATELY shitty you got filtered!!!!!!
easily derek yu's worst game. worse than the mermaid one.

>ugh, its so CLUNKY bros. I just, ugh...
>>
>>735006857
>it's DELIBERATELY shitty
The only two arguably bad games in the entire collection are Barbuta and Combatants.

thought it was pretty mediocre.
the game with the birds was probably the best one and mooncat actually did feel like an early gaming developers eccentric idea of game controls that never made it into the future but most of the other games just felt bad on purpose, were too simplistic to be enjoyable or had genuinely terrible interfaces.

I'd rather just play actual NES games in most cases.
>>
so retro, i too remember when old games were filled with blacks and had shitty tumblr artstyle

Had a hard time putting into words but I think I got what I dislike about it.

The games mostly feel like the very very early NES black box games, rather than the way more refined and interesting games we got with and after Super Mario Bros, which is the black box outlier.
I dont know many people who feel nostalgic towards these games and I dont know if replicating their design philosophy was the right call. Of course things had to be simple and trimmed down to make 50 unique games work but maybe setting out to make 50 games was a mistake in the first place.
>>
>>735006694
I will never beat Rakshasa
I saw the final boss
>>
>>735006694
I still load it up on occasion and play something
I never cherried a lot of the games so it's fun to tackle those challenges. Recently got the cherry for Golfaria
>>

That happens to you a lot
>>
>>735008007
I couldve just said game bad and it wouldve been no less wrong than my original post.
>>
I guess that schizo with a hate boner for Derek Yu is still constantly monitoring and shitposting in these threads
>>
>>735008598
He probably made the thread just so he could do his posts since no one cares about the game as much as him
>>
>like 5 good games
>45 worthless garbage turds
they should have just only released the good games
>>
>>735008598
this is the first derek yu game I played and I didnt like it.
might play spelunky one day.

>Retro Game Challange, but without the quality or soul
>>
>>735008687
What are the 5 you think are good? Don't say fucking Party House
>>
I liked both the concept and the execution. But it didn't blow my mind or anything.
>>
>>735008858
yeah I liked this way more even though it had fewer games.
the context, storyline and details like magazines hyping up extremely lazy "sequels" that barely changed anything made it come across as super authentic.
>>
>>735006857
>>735006990
Fist Hell is the fucking worst
Mortol and Warp Tank easily worth the $20 on their own, but you also get Party House and Bug Hunter as a bonus
>>
why is /v/ so contrarian?
>>
>>735008936
Unfortunately the first game is worse than anything in UFO 50 and sucks donkey balls, and you have to win achievements in it to unlock another game
>>
>>735008981
this has become an utterly useless term at this point.
>>
>>735008858
I already played videogames in front of a TV as a child and read the magazines, so I don't see the appeal
>>
>>735009274
its meant to be nostalgic. its probably less interesting for those who didnt experience it.
>>
>>735006990
nah, barbuta rules, and there's tons of more genuinely shit games, like party house, every campanella, big bell race, magic garden, ninpek, that shitty vertishooter, the retarded owl game, the shitty arena shooter and its prequel, and so many more, like golfaria and caramel caramel and the shitty idle game with the campanella faggot
good thing all the utter SHIT in the game are far counteracted by the genuinely amazing games like pingolf, mini & max, the aforementioned barbuta, mortol, quibble race, onion delivery, divers, mooncat, valbrace, vrainger, war ptank, avianos, disconia, rail heist, and the one good game featuring the campanella fag
>>
>>735009316
It's less interesting because it makes you sit through a nostalgia pandering meta-narrative. At least UFO 50 focuses on the games.
>>
>>735009397
nah the narrative is the hook.
anybody can boot up some dogshit low quality NES games that dont compare to the actual good stuff whats special about the gamecenter cx game is that it puts you back into the perspective of an 80/90s child. even the slower game unlocks replicates the experience to a degree, as most didnt get access to fuckload of new cheap games all the time with massive steam backlogs looming over them.
>>
>>735006694
great meta commentary on the era of endless AI slop
>>
Camouflage doesn't get any love because it has no replay value but it was fun :)
>>
>>735009397
the meta-narrative is the entire point of ufo50 you unironic fucking retard, that's the entire reason WHY the games are purposely "bad" and why the ways in which they are "bad" changes as the release chronology goes on, jesus fucking christ you retards are literally so goddamn obliviously retarded it's insane, you're literal fucking bonobo shiteating monkeys
>>
>>735009340
barbuta is trash, and i say that as someone who has played way more actual retro games than you
>>
>>735006990
Combatants is one of the best
>>
>>735009782
yeah its clearly intentional when you look at the extreme difference in quality between the first and last game in it.
wouldve helped if there was more of it desu. clearly it was too subtle for morons.
>>
>>735009340
>party house
>shit

Filtered.
>>
>>735007137
>>I'd rather just play actual NES games in most cases.
This. It's essentially a game for zoomers who never really played any old games for more than 5 minutes and have mistaken surface detail for depth.

Basically nothing on offer here is that interesting. The biggest missing element is the arcade mentality, these are at best glorified roguelites.
>>
>>735009604
it's a crime it had so few levels.
>>
Literally everything relating to the meta narrative is optional. You can just play the games. Is /v/ actually retarded?
>>
>>735006694
holy fuck forgot about this shit, went completely forgotten like I expected it to
>muh meta narrative gaymen
>>
>>735006694
Probably the most "can't put it down for weeks" game I've played in years. It's a shame it didn't do as well as Spelunky and won't get content updates though.
>>
>>735009953
no I think the issue there is actually that they are too much like arcade games of the pacman and donkey kong type where you are locked to one screen and have one gimmick defining the whole game, rather than the good legendary NES games that offered way more.
>>
>>735009872
>the extreme difference in quality between the first and last game in it.
Yeah, Cyber Owls is a complete piece of shit and Barbuta is the best game in the collection. Why would they make the games worse the further in you get?
>>
>>735009997
>the average /v/ tard is so dumb that they don't understand what "completely forgotten" means
>>
>>735009782
Kinda wish they had leaned harder on the meta aspect desu. It was the best part of Retro Game Challenge, with all the magazines, teasers, etc.
I liked the idea of this company started for fun that eventually got coopted and ruined by corpotrash, but it somehow felt unfinished, and AFAIK the ARG is incomplete and nobody figured what those time capsules were for.
>>
>>735006694
excellent idea but nothing to hold it together
a chinese 9999-in-1 tetris game has more soul
I suppose "Game of the generation" was an unintended irony
>>735007137
>I'd rather just play actual NES games in most cases.
yeah
not only they are a technological miracle but you can actually enjoy them
same goes for Outrun, which is more fun than ANY racing game made before or after
>>
>>735009785
nah, barbuta is peak, you're a faggot zoomer who got filtered and has never played an actual retro game in your entire life
>>
barbuta was made for people who once heard about castlevania but never actually played it.
>>
>>735010230
damn i struck a nerve. calm down, son.
>>
>>735010242
It felt more like an MSX platformer, they were all like that
>>
>>735010021
the only meaningful content update they could do is making GODSBLOOD into a full game
the whatever tower hidden game however is better off "unfinished"
>>
>>735010038
>Why would they make the games worse the further in you get?
because the company lost its most passionate founder and got bought up by soulless bugman creatures, you would know this if you had actually PLAYED the game instead of looking at every game at the surface level and never finishing any of them and never going any deeper
0/10 apply yourself
>>
>>735009340
>party house bad
>divers good
huh?
>>
>>735010343
Yeah, godsblood felt like it had potential.
I think they could always add some extra content/levels to some of the shorter existing games, or perhaps throw in a DLC with 5 more games including godsblood and maybe sequels to whichever games people seemed to like most.
>>
>>735010035
pac-man is better than like, 3/4 of the nes library.
>>
>>735006694
arino's challenge but bad
>>
>>735010521
thats irrelevant because nobody cares about 3/4 of the NES library.
>>
>>735010447
the most i could see really them do beyond godsblood is making an alternative course for pingolf
other than that, people are already doing mods for the games which gives them more content for people, and they've been doing a lot of bug hunting although they still have yet to fix the gamecrashing bug in valbrace whenever you block the larva ball
>>
>>735010252
>damn i'm stuck in a cave. calm down, son.
>>
>>735006694
I wanted this game, but I woke up one day not wanting it. Weird.
>>
>>735010434
>they made the game bad on purpose for the meta-narrative!
Bizarre cope.
>>
>>735011557
Barbuta straight up has no music, and the games in the last row have way better graphics and shit like cutscenes unlike the early entries.
>>
>>735006694
i legit forgot this existed
>>
>>735011557
buzzword spouting non-argument
>>
Did anyone ever figure out a connection across all the games? I remember half a dozen of them were tied to Amy (House Party, Night Manor, Mini & Max, Combatants,Hell fist, Hot Foot), and a bunch of the space/pilot shit is connected through Onion Delivery. There's also the "texas taken over by demons" trilogy, plus Mini & Max having a Rail Heist train set, and the 3 autismo games (Barbuta, Mooncat, Divers) being in the same continuity and maybe related to warptank, but that's about it.
>>
>>735012453
pretty much the only game that i cannot find any connections to is magic garden, and maybe block koala
even fucking godsblood has a connection to quibble race in the form of its main character being one of the possible betting characters in that
>>
>>735012453
>"texas taken over by demons" trilogy
Grimstone, Rail Heist and what?
>>
>>735012756
devilition
>>
>>735010164
>I suppose "Game of the generation" was an unintended irony
What the hell did this latinx mean by this?
>>
>>735006694
Nah it was trash. KYS unironically, the nes games I played were better than anything in UFO 50
>>
>>735012453
Mooncat is also loosely connected to Valbrace
>>
>>735006694
I don't like the color palette
It has that chunky puke look commodore 64 games had
>>
>>735007274
I always thought it was supposed to be Shibuya Punk like Jet Set or Downtown
>>
>>735013040
That must be why everyone is so excited to discuss NES games
>>
>>735013506
Maybe Superflat
>>
>>735013237
what's the connection between mooncat and valbrace?
>>
>>735006694
>retroslop
no thanks. I don't have fake nostalgia for games that were ass even at the time they released.
>>

Me? 50 cherries. Good game. Most were easy, some made me want to tear my hair out.

the sword and shield ending in mooncat
though it can be considered a reference to Barbuta instead

>>
>>735014526
What games do you enjoy playing?
>>
>>735014275
I got to 36/31, don't know if I'll ever feel like getting through the games I don't like
>>
>>735015551
When you get all 50 cherries the little pig starts celebrating. Is that a good enough reason for you?
>>
>>735016057
>cheevoheaded uncs actually think this
>>
>>735006694
which one?
>>
>>735006694
wokeslop
>>
The only games I completed were Party House, Mooncat, and Mini+Max.
The rest I've tried completing and have had something ruin my gameplay experience.
I'll try the horror VN next, since I heard it's pretty damn good.
>>
whats the ideal way to play these games?
stick to one? read the manual completely first?
>>
>>735006694
>we made 98% of the games bad on purpose, as a joke
>"game of the generation"
lol no
>>
>>735007137
"Lore" has a uncanny feel, Sega Master System and PC Engine has games with more complex design and more colors, meanwhile UFO 50 stuck in the NES' design of black backgrounds.
>>
>>735006694
sex with Alpha
>>
Honestly, in the final, the only game that felt like a GAME to me was Rock On Island. I cherried that bitch. Kinda got easy to solve eventually and has zero replay value, but it was fun for what it was. There are a few more nice games but nothing I would pay for individually. Which is the big issue I have with it. Objectively it is probably worth the asking price from a variety/game length standpoint, but it's not that exciting to play overall.
>>
>>735018325
whatever you find fun. Some people tryhard by only unlocking one game and not moving onto another until they beat it, others randomly jump and try a bit of everything. I personally hopped around, and stuck to beating something when I landed on a game I really enjoyed.
