I thought comparing this to Animal Crossing just because it has a real time clock was a little dumb, but then I thought about it some more and realized. Are there even any other games out there besides AC and Pokemon with a real time clock, that aren't specifically inspired by Animal Crossing? I genuinely cannot think of any.

Ffxiv has a real time clock and isn't influenced by animal crossing

Holy shit I totally forgot Boktai even existed.

Yeah that absolutely counts. Didn’t it not just have a clock but also the stupid sunlight sensor cartridge gimmick? Kojima out there making you go outside before it was cool.

I guess that proves it isn’t just AC/Pokémon, but it’s still weird how few games actually *do* anything meaningful with real time. Most games that have a clock just fake a day/night cycle on a timer instead of syncing to your system clock.

Now that I think about it, Harvest Moon had RTC too and that predates AC. So maybe AC didn’t invent it, it just normalized it for comfy-core zoomers.

Do you mean having it used in a specific way or just having it at all?
Because the mainline pokemon games use a real time clock.

It's not comparable to the animal crossing series as a whole, but it is with NH

Kojima was producer, not director.

Give the Viva Pinata games a try.

Actually Kojima fucked that one up anyway because you couldn't see shit on the GBA's shitty screen when you went out in the sun. Screens are better these days but back then it fucking sucked. Also Harvest Moon does not use a real time clock, it uses the fake day/night cycle. And Animal Crossing series existed long before zoomers, it was a millennial series.

That's base building style survival crafting games in general, but it's not really a real time clock because you can close the game and it stops counting. If something takes an hour to build, you have to be in the game for an hour. AC you can just turn the game off for an hour.
