Obviously, the distances covered between areas are scaled down significantly gameplay wise in contrast to lore-wise as a design choice since long walks meant to signify going across the country or a mountain range would be boring to walk through if scaled properly. In retrospect it isn't that good because there's less player activity, but at the time it was novel and generous.The narrative itself is unique and interesting, especially seeing how poor it was in ds3.
