Implaing does 33 stance (greatswords) to square off's 40 which is stuck to the straight swords, now imagine square off on a greatsword which would probalby deal 50 stance, you will poise break everything for as little as 8 fp cost

It was a balance decision to make straight swords worth using at all after they were nerfed so hard after ds3. The right call would've been to not nerf them and make square off more available but, it is what it is.

He uses the high stance damage of the Ash of War Square Off in order to effortlessly deal with two Cleanrot Knights. This Ash of War effectively:
1. Keeps them stunlocked as it quickly breaks their stance.
2. Deals good damage so he can kill them quickly.
3. Allows him to safely take them both down as he is often in the critical attack animation which provides invincibility.
The author of the thread clearly understands the power of the ability, and wonders why it was not allowed to be put on Greatswords.

Yeah
1h weapons in general did more relative damage in DS3, and straight swords went from above average 1h to below average 1h, so straight swords are doing quite a bit worse in ER. Also why Curved Swords are generally better than Straight Swords in ER, because they weren't subject to the same targeted damage reduction, so now do about the same damage, but faster.
Stance damage is also a much bigger deal in Elden Ring, something straight swords don't do well outside of Square Off.
Elden Ring enemies also tend to "lunge" way more when they attack, something that bothers straight swords specifically, because spacing was always a strength of straight swords, that they can effectively no longer do when a Crucible Knight Jetstream Sams towards you while attacking. Rapiers also suffer from this, but became the gold standard for shield poke and guard counter builds to make up for this. Most other 1h weapons are so close range that this doesn't affect them much, you are in ass sniffing range before you swing anyways.
And then a lot of the other 1h weapons have a niche that they excel at, where straight swords are just kinda shit at everything. Hammers do great stance damage for a one hand, spears have enough range to sometimes space still, fists have bonkers dps, ect

Shit damage and shit stance damage (no square off) elden ring really isn't a game of sword and shield unlike it's predecessors, it's a more go big or go home type of game where you want more damage above everything else

plus there are way more enemies in ER that require "medium" weapons to make them stagger on hit, "small" weapons like straight swords isn't gonna cut it

This to me should be required reading for noobs so that they understand how the game actually works.
The damage value tab is one of the most important because you can have high DPS and still eat shit against hard enemies because your attacks don't reach the binary threshold to make them flinch, so they just tank your hits and delete half your HP bar.

Weapons that can consistently dish out attacks at levels 2 and 3 make the game far easier to play.
