Now that the it is unequivocally dead and buried with no hopes of further resuscitation, what are your honest thoughts on the Ninja Gaiden series?
NG is proof that a series ultimately needs more than just fun gameplay and difficulty to succeed. The lack of casual appeal created a schizophrenic discord fanbase that poisoned the entire IP and ultimately killed it. Trying to appeal to hardcore fans is ultimately a fools errand because they will inevitably nitpick every little detail

I was defending NG4 quite a bit but playing through NG2 and NG2B White modded then going to NG4 again with Ryu and the downgrade is just impossible to ignore. It's hard to explain what about NG4 feels worse even if on a surface level it works similarly, but I think they fucked up with the BR/Gleam bar and the random blocking, the later in particular makes the base modes useless, but basic moves are a huge part of NG's gameplay before.

>>735024573I started with Black over a decade ago. It's just that some stuff about NG4 I just didn't really notice until I spend some time in 2 again and thinking about it indepth. I only finished 4 in hard mode, but it's master ninja that got me thinking about the mechanics more indepth since something felt wrong to me. Yakumo himself helps a lot to make 4 stand out as a good game in sort of a vacuum, but when directly comparing Ryu in 2 and Ryu in 4 that's where I noticed most of the gameplay is just worse and a bit dumbed down.
1-3RE are kino and all some of the best action games ever. 4 is just wrong. A game that was clearly never meant to be Ninja Gaiden that got forced into it, made by people who don't love or even care about Ninja Gaiden. It could have been a decent action game if it was called something else, but instead serves as a final insult to a once-great series, digging up its corpse just to spit on it and bury it in an even deeper darker hole where it will never escape.

>>735028492Great combat that on paper is a step up from 2 but in practice requires the player to self impose challenges to not completely steamroll every encounter since TN have no idea how to do enemy encounters in an open world and yokai still have their movesets from nioh 1 which rely on the player having nioh 1 options and not obscene stuff like double jumps and infinite combos that can be cancelled at any point in the animation. On top of this enemy aggression feels lower, damage done to player is lower, enemy variety is somehow worse than ever despite nioh 2 getting it right. Hopefully dlcs fix most of these issues but most praise definitely comes from newcomers to the series.

The way Fromsoft achieved mainstream success was by creating games that feel hard and thus rewarding but ultimately yield themselves to persistence or cheese strats instead of walling the rest of the game behind skill barriers. You'll notice basically every difficult game these days is an RPG so the player can circumvent difficult sections by grinding or knowledge checks or simply doing something else.
