The randomness averages out over time.I do understand the complaints in very specific situations. There are a few maps in some campaigns where you only have a few units and can't get new ones, in those you might literally have to savescum if you get sufficiently bad rolls, but most maps are fine.

Shitters are still complaining about the same thing in Xcom 2 threads and I don't understand it, but the BFW time limit is even milder and more necessary because of gold carryover (which honestly, might be one of the game's few mistakes)
I remember playing it throughout the years, also remember that most campaigns are unfinished messes and some require you to savescum to make it through but that might have just been some fan campaigns I'm remembering.
