People really like the charm of imperfection, hence why Ditto in this game and merchandising has the shitty ditto face in its transformations from the cartoon, instead of a perfect replication like ditto in the games proper. Also because what's the point of selling a Ditto transformed into Pikachu if it looks indistinguishable from a pikachu? You basically just double your merchandising potential with a simple modification from complex face to beady eyes and a line mouth.

Publishers already hated the idea of used game sales since they didn't benefit at all so during 7th gen they introduced pre-order DLC incentives to ensure people bought new.
That stopped being a problem when digital became more dominant vs physical, but you run into the same problem if people could sell their digital games. You'd see publishers chopping the fuck out of them to force people to buy anything and everything directly from a storefront as a new digital copy to give them money.
