For real though, I think that this was basically the only direction left for Kratos after GoW 3. From the moment the idea was to make a sequel to the main trilogy with Kratos back in another land, he really couldn't be anything more than someone trying to move past his history. He certainly couldn't be back to his old angry self since everyone who had wronged him was dead, and giving him fresh new reasons to be angry offscreen between Greece and Norway wouldn't be well received.

I think they did a decent job of it in the reboot, but it's a smaller-scale story when you look at it. They completely fumbled Ragnarok, even though Kratos is one of the best parts of it, because they had a shitty direction for the Norse gods in general and Atreus as a teen is not sympathetic in the least.
