Play them in release order from King's Field 1. This includes non From games such as Nioh or Lords of the Fallen.

Dark Souls improved on some things Demon's Souls was lacking in but Demon's Souls levels have a unique atmosphere that some might prefer of Dark Souls aesthetic

Demon's Souls is my favorite of all time and I think it's the best way to get into it. Dark Souls improved upon it in some ways, fell back in others. I'd say they're of roughly equal quality, like >>735030340 said. Demon's Souls is grimmer, perhaps, and the grass system is more forgiving than estus though the archstones are less forgiving than bonfires.
