Who has worse worldbuilding. Fromsoft or Bethesda
>>735034624>Who has worse worldbuilding. Fromsoft or Bethesdamore b8 threads to draw attention to some starfield gaslighting announcement that is incoming
>>735034624What do they eat?
>>735034624At this point, Bethesda. Easily.
>>735034624Define worldbuilding first
>>735034789Something that feels like it's lived in by people.I don't know why you'd build a castle on a little spindle of rock that's a mile tall. "Defensive positioning" maybe but it's already impossible to scale.Maybe it was a part of the greater land before and all the land that wasn't that specifically just fell off.If this were a part of an RPG that didn't have nonsense millenial writing it'd probably throw something out about "disgraced nobleman zanziserf became extremely antisocial and found a rock that he could fuck off to. Rumor has it there's some fancy treasure in there but no one has ever been able to reach him"
>>735035557In that case Elden Ring's world is completely dogshit and indefensible. Different story with Lordran though.
>>735034624One relies on a bunch of youtube essayist to try fill in the gaps for a near non-existant retarded lore and "world building" and any writer at the helm could've been replaced by a chimpanzee from the zoo and you would see no difference. The other one just needs get the one in charge of lore and world building really high and locked in a room with pens and paper.
>>735035557Aren't fromsoft worlds specifically not lived in by people? As in everyone fucking died?
>>735036739I believe so. They are set hundreds of years after some apocalyptic event?
>>735034624Comparing across the histories of their main game series, Fromsoft. No Soulsbornering game has a world that actually feels like it could exist and function.
>>735036739It's previously grand civilizations that are now inhabited by crazy people and a few straggling survivors.Unfortunately ER just kind of shits the bed in both respects to me. I ask why someone would build a castle in a giant wasteland of lava regardless of how sick it might look (or something it's a hypothetical) and also there's guy sitting on a log out in the open in a world of murderous crazy people waiting for some guy to give him 1000 runes for a magic doodad.
>>735035557That area is called a Chapel. It is similar to a monk's retreat. Many have been historically built in places where you can't easily access them. You start in a church, and leave it and walk through the monastary until you're killed or the ground caves in and you're spirited away by Melina. The Church actually has religious functions, like where the spirit ash of the Storm Lord is kept in the rafters as the Shinto-ist fetish.
>>735034624Bethesda only has one game with good worldbuilding.>inb4 From has zerokys
>>735035557Lol retard. You have zero comprehension skills. How brown are you?
>>735035557If that’s you’re definition then it’s two extremes, From worlds have always been visually and thematically interesting but never in any of the Souls games did I get an impression that people could have lived there or that there was any real history in them.Beth games can be reduced to “dude romans” or “dude vikings” on the surface but Tamriel is one of the most interesting and in-depth fantasy universes not just in gaming but in general
>>735037265>hey anon where do you live>stupid fuck faggot mountain
Starfield has some of the worst worldbuilding I've ever seen in a game where detailed worldbuilding is very important. From worldbuilding is shallow but evocative which is fine for a game where the world is just a backdrop for killing monsters.
>>735037231>I ask why someone would build a castle in a giant wasteland of lava regardless of how sick it might look (or something it's a hypothetical)To be fair, that is explained in that Rykard was intentionally living there seeking knowledge about the ancient serpent cult that lived in the area before Marika's rule. He was basically covertly reviving an ancient pagan religion that happened to be localized in that area. Other stuff like the troll blacksmith just jerking off on the side of the road forever isn't explicable.
>>735034624Bethesda keeps making the same mistakes over and over againAt least Fromsoft tries something new every third game and then it either works or not
>>735034624Bethesda had exactly one game with notoriously good worldbuilding, and in every subsequent entry of the franchise they basically just treat their own lore as an obstacle to be overcome so that they may accomplish their ultimate goal of writing generic fantasy stories with wacky characters that are deliberately kept simple so that even retards may enjoy them, without that much focus on worldbuilding anymoreFromsoft worldbuilding is always unabashedly just an excuse to have the same depressing post-apocalyptic setting where you fight giant monsters and every friendly NPC has a fucked up sad fate. Not really my thing, but i guess i can respect it
>>735034681fpbp this is simple datamine thread
>>735037498>Other stuff like the troll blacksmith just jerking off on the side of the road forever isn't explicable.>carian royal blacksmith hanging out next to caria manor after they were kicked out by cuckoo niggersgee what an unsolvable mystery
>>735034624modern bethesda makes some attempt at world building while from does not. it's especially noticeable in ER. it's something that works for the souls games because they're limited in scope by comparison. ER has no world building at all and people routinely confuse lore with world building. but in their defense why would they try you were going to buy it anyway.
>>735037886Why is he out in the rain?
>>735034624Fromsoft generally sucks ass at proper worldbuilding, but at the same time their world is really only meant to be a cool looking and aura-farming backdrop for a murder-hobo simulator, so Bethesda's flaws seem more significant given their games have a larger focus on story
>>735037367>thematically interesting but never in any of the Souls games did I get an impression that people could have lived there or that there was any real history in them.If there is one way I would describe the early (good) games it'd probably be this.Other would people say "hard" but I'd use the term "mature". These aren't just video game assets floating in space because people thought they look cool. Almost everything in Demons' Souls has a of reason for being there. If you play it like a typical video game then you get the shit kicked out of you a thousand times but if you pay attention to what's around you realize that you're above where you were previously and that there's a ladder next to the staircase that doesn't work because it's broken. That one lift in Demons' Souls that exists to lift heavy rocks is more interesting to me than the magic floating elevator with no apparent means of propulsion that takes you to a giant magic underground city in Elden Ring.Opinions are opinions but this is just one more piece of evidence to me that no one in the modern audience has any idea what these games are. It's a generic title like Madden or Battlefield.
