It had a potentially interesting story told in a roundabout and stupid way. You're also frontloaded with a bunch of technobabble so people that struggle with that shit can't keep up from the start. It also lacks interesting antagonists and just feels like you're on the run from something impersonal the entire time. Most of the game feels like a never ending tutorial. Constantly drip feeding you new things but rarely doing anything interesting with them. I forget if FF13 was the game that started the "it gets good after 50 hours!" meme but thats actually how the game is. Most of the game is linear with simplistic gameplay that eventually blossoms into something cool, but the point where it gets good is right before the end of the game. Most people will choose to just end the game at that point instead of exploring what might as well be a different game.To the game's credit, it is has some legitimately beautiful scenery, especially for a ps3 game. The newer games are dull and dreary in comparison and lack the fantastical environments that 13 has.
Combined 10's general design and 12's auto battle stuff into a high budget slopfest with a female cloud, made 0 sense to hate it because it was perfectly serviceable at that point. It was one of those things where people just parroted each others opinion to fit in. Japanese console games were hated a lot during the late 2000s across the board, more than any other time in history, it was weird

13 had some best graphix in the world, in 2010. on natural hardware of course, ps3 version. 13 was mid but nice. but everyone waited for some BIG FINAL FANTASY GAME, ff12 was in 2006, but 13 was in 2010, we waited 4 years for what. for game without world map, towns, quests, without nice characters, or antagonists, with only 6 summons, which was pretty bad. with some bad story, and some mid combat. i dunno, this was such dissappointment back then. and 15 was even worse.
